          Ransomware has been around for almost 30 years, so why does it feel like it's getting worse?   

Ransomware is not new. The malware, which encrypts data and demands payment in exchange for decryption keys, has been with us for almost 30 years.

So why does it feel like it's getting worse? Well, that's because it is getting worse.

In seemingly no time at all, ransomware has gone from an obscure threat faced by a select few to a plague crippling hospitals, banks, public transportation systems, and even video games. Frustratingly, the explosive growth of ransomware shows no signs of abating - leaving victims wondering why them, and why now?

The answer to both of those questions involves cryptocurrency and the National Security Agency.

But first, a little history

The first known ransomware attack hit the healthcare industry way back in 1989. According to the cybersecurity blog Practically Unhackable, a biologist by the name of Joseph Popp sent close to 20,000 floppy disks to researchers claiming they contained a survey which would help scientists determine a patient's risk for contracting HIV.

What was left unmentioned in the promotional material was that the disks also encrypted file names on infected computers - rendering them practically unusable. Instead of their typical boot screens, victims were shown a message demanding a $189 payment in order to unlock the system.

Popp, who had a PhD from Harvard, was an evolutionary biologist and fell outside of what we think of today as a stereotypical hacker.

According to The Atlantic, after he was arrested and charged with blackmail, Popp insisted that he intended to donate the proceeds from his scheme to HIV-related research.

          Steampunk zombies in Seattle   
Well, I am slowly emerging from my reading funk. I had an opportunity to focus on reading yesterday. I managed a charity golf tournament, which mostly means waiting for the people to come back, so you can hand out prizes. Anyway, there was a lot of reading time. One of the books I read was Cherie Priest's Boneshaker. Her prior work has mostly been in Southern gothic horror. Here she takes a different tack with a steampunk science fiction tale.

If you don't know steampunk, it is a style of science fiction usually set in the 19th century that uses high technology based on the tech of the day. So there are dirigibles, babbage engines, and various steam powered mechanisms. Priest's tale is set in a Seattle devastated by a steam powered drill machine meant to explore for gold in the Klondike. The machine went wild one day and wrecked much of the city. Even worse, it released a gas, called the blight, that killed many and turned others in zombies. The outside world protected itself by throwing a wall around Seattle.

15 years later the son of the man whose Boneshaker wrecked the town heads back in to clear his name. His mom, with whom he has a tenuous relationship, chases after him. The two quests give Priest the chance to show off her creative world building, with Confederate (the war has been going on for nearly two decades) airships, cyborgs, hellish factories designed to bring clean air into the Blight-infected Seattle and all manner of odd characters.

In the end, I liked the world more than the story itself. I liked the plot of the mother seeking our her son, but thought the son's wanderings were less interesting. Priest is working on another book in this world, which I will most likely try.

By the way, the book had one very nice design element I appreciated. To give the book a nice steampunk patina, the text is printed in a sepia color. It is quite attractive and subtle.

The Abashiri Family is a live-action adaptation of the Go Nagai manga. If that name sounds familiar, even to non-manga fans, its because he's a bit of a legend, and so many of his works have been made into movies. For instance Cutie Honey, Devilman, Kekko Kamen, Maboroshi Panty, Mazinger Z and more.

According to Nagai's IMDB bio, it lists his trademark as "Likes to put in as much nudity, sexual and scatological material as he can to see what he can get away with.". Righto! Now that we've established tonal context ...

Unfortunately, this outing is not so perverse ... however it does succeed in continuing his tradition of over-the-top craziness that I've come to love in Japanese cinema.

The Abashiri Family are a nasty bunch of criminals, presided over by their patriarch Daemon. There is Goemon the pervert, Naojiro the cyborg, Kichiza the bomb specialist, and the sexy daughter Kikunosuke (J-idol Erica Tonoka).


They live in an outlaw city at the foot of Mt Fuji called the Nippon Extra-Territory, where they have a long-running feud with a rival crime family. Unbeknownst to the Abashiri's, their rivals have contrived to have them implanted with special 'anti-crime' chips that immobilise them whenever a criminal thought enters their head.

With this advantage, the rival clan hopes to exterminate the Abashiri's once and for all - but it won't be that easy! Both clan partriarchs have magical powers, and the daughters have the obligatory ass-kicking martial arts skills. Throw in some chanbara-style swordplay and you've got all the traditional elements of the modern Japanese live-action flick.

Fans of B-grade J-Mayhem will know not to expect a huge budget, and so it is with this entry. It's obviously low budget and the cheap-ass special effects are especially cheesy. Nonetheless there are also some surprisingly effective scenes.

What this film adds to the mix, is what is so often missing from this kind of fare - laughs. When you've only got a small budget and are going for a b-movie vibe, you need to add one or more of a) Laughs, b) Boobs, or c) Scares. Sorry to say there's no boobs or scares here ... but there are plenty enough laughs to make up for it. This is no doubt helped along by the seasoned acting skills of the two patriarchs, who add a semblance of quality to proceedings.


The eye-candy factor is provided by J-idol Erica Tonoka in her feature debut, and she's as cute as you'd expect. She also gets to wield a katana in her school uniform and get covered in blood - as you probably also expected. What you might not have expected is that she is surprisingly funny, with what seems a natural gift for comedy.

When all is said and done, this is a cheapo b-grade comedy from Japan. But as far as such things go, its a pretty good one. I laughed out loud throughout, and so found it easier to overlook some of the film's shortcomings. If you're in the mood for a bit of light-hearted Japanese madness, I recommend giving it a blast.

I'm ashamed to say that I didn't pay attention to this when it was released, due mostly to the film's title and cover art - which made it seem like a Korean romcom melodrama - not exactly my style.

However what I didn't realise, and should have, was that this is a Park Chan-wook movie (Oldboy, Thirst, etc) ... and Mr Park just doesn't make bad movies. Period. In fact he seems to be single-handedly redefining excellence in every genre he attempts.

This is creative film-making at its best and just another confirmation that he is one of the most incredible directors around right now. I've heard that Park made this movie as a departure from his usual style so that his 12yo daughter could watch one of his movies. Well, rest assured - this is not at all what I'd consider a child's movie. Although it does have a somewhat more upbeat heart than let's say, revenge-killing, it is still wildly surreal, offbeat and intelligent.

The movie follows Cha Young-goon (Lim) who ends up in a lunatic asylum, believing that she's actually a cyborg. Using her grandma's false teeth to converse with vending machines and light fixtures, it's not such a surprise that she has ended up here.

The problem is that she keeps running out of energy. Obviously the hospital food is of no use to a cyborg, but sucking batteries isn't giving her a great deal of juice either.

Luckily she meets up with Park Il-soon (Rain), who is able to steal the peculiarities or delusions of other patients. In a nod to the director's previous Revenge trilogy, she convinces him to steal her 'sympathy' so that she is free to remorselessly wipe-out the hospital orderlies.

Along the way we meet many of the other patients, all with their own strange quirks. One patient walks everywhere backwards while believing that everything that goes wrong is his fault. Another can't stop eating but has magic boots that enable her to fly if she concentrates hard enough.

What's really interesting is how Park has used the delusions of the schizophrenic patients to show an altered reality, allowing the film to integrate Alice in Wonderland style visuals, psychotic killing sprees, and sci-fi elements into the story completely seamlessly. This is quite some feat!

To say any more of the plot would spoil the thrill of the ride, and I'm not sure I could fully do it justice in any case. Fans of unique, surreal movies should not delay in checking this one out. It's extremely funny, well-written, well-acted and has top-notch production values.

As with all of Park's movies, the visuals are spectacular - but even more so here. Just check out the screen-caps to see what I mean - and I could easily have included four times as many.

          Alien VS Predator Arcade   

Capcom released AvP in 1994, an arcade effort that was never officially ported to any different platform than the slotted originator. A blessing MAME exists, and AH!, what a sweet blessing it is, indeed. This classic foam of explicit alien eradication exhibits a couple of welcomed focal traits. First and foremost, it allows three players to wage war against hordes of xenomorphs simultaneously, thus a quite special co-op mode is offered once neither of the three active participants have immense of a butt 'nuff to take essential place away from the other players, even better: AvP gives you playable characters with considerable differences, while maintaining a fluent, pleasant faithfulness and even inventiveness to the stable, integral consensus Beat'em Up traditions the game builds upon.

AvP introduces seven stages connected via neat mini cutscenes to present a quite decent story framework with - welcomely - no more aspirations than to place the player into situations where the only way out is through. The piece offers four playable characters with various default weapons accessible to each one of them. You have your cute little anime cyborg chick who is set to superaggressive mode all the time, a "tank" type male character with an implanted Smart Gun - the classic Alien toy - modification and the dumb look on dumb face included, while the row of selection is concluded by two Predators, namely the "stock-specie" we had chance to witness in the classic Predator movie in 1986, and even a Predator Hunter is offered, simply the most strong, most swift character you can play the game with.

The effort introduces all the cool movements you probably anticipate from a solid representative of the genre, these include: a straight combo streak consisting of four-five consecutive hits available for each character, an ultimate-attack useful to unleash punishment on all surrounding enemies, while you have the option to grab most adversaries to either take them in the air and groundplant them decently or to deconstruct them by vulgar display of power, an unavoidable attackfoam executed on the grasped baddie. A nice set of charge movements are available too, these are very useful both to change places very swiftly and to unleash powerful attacks on multiple opponents. An upper-and lower level charge attack is accessible.

Weapons are essential elements in the game. Each stage is packed with loads and loads of destructible objects to reveal quite some types of extras, these include all kinds of meals and softdrinks to replenish lost energy and super magazines that allow you to unleash projectiles without limitations for a short period of time. Otherwise, weapons tend to overheat or end up empty quite hastily - if and when this happens you are to wait for a while until the weapon cools down, or, if you play with the cyber chick, you have to reload. A risky period as the character is essentially defenseless during these sequences, an evident trade-off for her considerable speed.

"Outsider weapons" are also available, instruments you can pick up and either shoot with them or throw them at the enemy. Grenades and knives, primarily. Naturally you do not want to leave a stage without a good old bossfight, thus I am most happy to inform you that AvP delivers a boss to conclude each and every stage of the game.

Rhythmization of the effort is quite decent, considering the diversity of the atrocities you are subjected to by the multiple types of enemies. Settings do reflect noticeable aspiration to enrich the game with refreshing modal variation, selling out nicely outlined sketches of the classic Alien atmosphere, hardly overkilling any particular sequence. AvP consists of quite a few memorable portions, segments you will definitely remember and probably end up inspired to practice peak sequences out, growing more and more skillful at punishing alien sitorgans. The game therefore allows, even better: invites you to be the AvP Arcade Geek, and it seems safe to conclude that this is a temptation which remained intact since 1994.

-He hates playing Cyborg Superman. Goes on to say that the mask is cheap, costume is cheap, and storyline is cheap.

-Writers told him he was playing Cyborg Superman but never bothered to give any backstory to the character: how/why he became Cyborg Superman

-Is instantly bored and checks out whenever he has to play the character

          KISS MEETS The PHANTOM of The PARK   

KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park is a 1978 TV movie. The film starts a little slow while it gets the other characters in the movie, besides KISS,  introduced to the audience. Once KISS starts appearing in the film, it's like a train wreck that has come off the rails, which in this case is a lot of fun.

The park referred to in the title is an amusement park (actually Magic Mountain) and the creator (Anthony Zerbe) of the park has gone loopy and became obsessed with turning people into cyborgs. While he's never actually referred to as The Phantom, he does have an underground lair where he performs all his devious misdeeds. Having KISS perform at the park is the last straw for The Phantom and he plans to discredit them. The first thing he does is make a robotic copy of Gene Simmons and have it wreck a Coke stand (one of many bad F/X in the movie, since it's obvious the stand is made out of Styrofoam). As a side note, Coke must have sponsored some of the movie, since their product shows up throughout the film. The Phantom's final plan is to make KISS duplicates and have these clones cause a riot at the final concert where they will sing "Rip and Destroy" and the fans, being mindless idiots in his opinion, will go wild and destroy the park.

KISS, according to this film (which borrows from the KISS comics), are not only a rock band, but they also have super powers. These special powers have been granted to them by secret talismans, which they carry around in a briefcase. Each member has a name to reflect his unique power. Gene Simmons is Demon and he growls instead of talks most of the time and can also shoot fire out of his mouth. Peter Criss is Cat Man and he can jump really high. Ace Frehley is Space Ace and can teleport the group. Paul Stanley is Star Child and can shoot lasers from his eyes. The craziest two scenes in the film (among many crazy scenes) are when KISS fight an army of white cat robots and when KISS fight their robotic selves near the end of the movie. In both these scenes, all the KISS members get to use their special powers.

KISS have distanced themselves from this movie and for good reason. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed it, the plot is ludicrous. If I said the members of KISS and their acting ability was abysmal, I would still be too kind. In recent years KISS has released the European version of this film on KISS: Kissology Volume Two, but to see the original US TV version, you'll need to either buy a used vhs (fairly inexpensive) or get a copy from the grey market. Over the years, I've watched a lot of movies that were billed as "so bad, they're good". Some actually turned out to be good and some just turned out to be god awful bad, but KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park is truly "so bad. it's good".

Una vez, hace muchos años, entre otras ideas que nunca llevé a cabo estuvo el fabricar una cámara estenopeica de plomo y dejarla sumergida, colocada en el fondo del mar varios días, incluso lanzar varias al océano y que el azar determinara el encuadre o hacia dónde quedaba el estenope.
Nunca pasó del concepto, y desde luego había problemas técnicos, como el factor de la atenuación de la luz con la profundidad o la resistencia de una emulsión fotosensible a una inmersión prolongada en agua salada. Porque la cámara quedaría inundada durante todo ese tiempo, y la luz una vez pasado el agujero que haría de objetivo tendría que atravesar esa cámara de agua de mar.
Hace más o menos un año conocí un proyecto fotográfico que de alguna forma tiene relación con esto: las exposiciones de un año de Michael Chrisman, usando cámaras estenopeicas. Se pueden leer referencias aquí (en español) y aquí (en inglés).


La visión de las cámaras de plomo hundiéndose y el aire escapando por el estenope tomó la forma de un guión, en realidad de los guiones de dos pequeñas historias que estos días he estado uniendo y limpiando de lo superfluo. Lo que ha quedado ha sido básicamente melancolía, plomo, océano y fotografía.

As part of SU’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, William "Memo" Nericcio, Professor of English & Comparative Literature at San Diego State University and director of their pathbreaking MALAS Program (the Master of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences), will deliver a lecture entitled “Cyborg Chicanos, Virtual Latinas, Smartphone Addiction, and Digital Culturas: Viral, Electric Mutations of Latinx Stereotypes in the Age of the Internet. ”

His talk is inspired by his American Library Association award-winning book Tex[t]-Mex: Seductive Hallucinations of the “Mexican” in America (2007) that explores representations of Latina/o identity in the popular media--in film, television, advertising, comic books, toys, literature, video games, graffiti, etc.

Before the talk, the public is invited to view his pop-up art exhibit Mextasy: Seductive Hallucinations of Latina/o Mannequins Prowling the American Unconscious, which further explores some of same themes as his talk, on display in the Wicomico Room from 4:00 PM until the end of the lecture. The talk and exhibit are sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, the SU Department of English, SU Galleries, and the Fulton Public Humanities Program. Among his other roles at SDSU, Nericcio works as lead faculty the NEH-supported Digital Humanities Initiative and also directs SDSU Press. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Connecticut from 1988 to 1991. He holds an MA and PhD in Comparative Literature from Cornell University where he worked as Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes's Graduate Research Assistant, hung out at parties with Edward Said, Jurgen Habermas, Gayatri Spivak, and Jacques Derrida (and worked with them in seminar as well). A Mexican-Sicilian-American and an innovative troublemaker, Nericcio was born in Laredo, Texas, along the Rio Grande River in South Texas.

          DC Rebirth: One Year Later   

It's been one year since DC Comics relaunched their fictional universe with all-new number one issues in what they called "DC Rebirth."  After looking at the Top 300 Comics sales list for May 2017, I thought it might be interesting to see how well the latest DC Universe relaunch is performing in the long term.

As expected, the big winner of the DC Rebirth relaunch is Batman.  As one of DC's biweekly titles, Batman had the unenviable task of following an incredible run by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo during The New 52 era, but writer Tom King and rotating artists David Finch and Mikel Janin have more than proven themselves.  Issues #22 and #23 charted at #3 and #7 respectively in the Top 300, although #22 was part of "The Button" crossover storyline with The Flash that featured an lenticular cover.  

And speaking of The Flash, that series is definitely the surprise winner of DC Rebirth. Issues #22 and #23 chart at #4 and #23 respectively, with The Flash #22 featuring "The Button" crossover with Batman and a lenticular cover.  The creative team of Joshua Williamson and Carmine Di Giandomenico have been positively killing it, a welcome improvement from The New 52, where the title languished around the Top 50 mark.

All-Star Batman, from Scott Snyder and various artists, has also been strong and charts at #15, an impressive feat considering the book costs $4.99 a month.  Unfortunately, the title is ending with issue #14 this September, presumably because Snyder is moving on to New Challengers later this year, which means DC will lose one of its strongest sellers.

Detective Comics also does well, proving fans can't get enough of Batman books as long as they're done decently.  Issues #956 and #957 come in at #19 and #20 on the Top 300, showing that the idea to feature Batman and a team of Batman-related heroes was a good one.  It's a shame though, that Batwoman does well as a team member here but her solo series only comes in at #81.

After the main Batman titles, Justice League turns up in the #21 and #22 position, apparently showing a little fatigue after spending most of Rebirth's first year around the Top 10 spot. Writer Bryan Hitch has received considerable criticism online from fans tired of the rather dull and lifeless storylines without recognizable villains, so perhaps some of them are finally giving up on the series.  #21 and #22 is still nothing to sneeze at though, so I wouldn't expect a creative change any time soon.

Thankfully, Superman is close behind, with issues #22 and #23 charting at #25 and #28 on the Top 300.  Writer Peter Tomasi and artist Patrick Gleason continue performing as a solid creative team after their terrific work on Batman and Robin as part of The New 52.  DC Rebirth has been wonderful to Superman fans, restoring the Pre-Flashpoint Superman with Lois as his wife and the addition of Jon Kent, a.k.a. Superboy.  Who knew that making Superman a cool dad was exactly what the character needed?

Another big surprise is Titans, which charts at #31 for issue #11.  Dan Abnett seems to be the first writer since Geoff Johns to really "get" the Titans, as he successfully balances the superteam heroics with the awareness that the team's close friendship with one another feels like family.  The art by Brett Booth could be better, especially with his rather cartoonish facial depictions, but as with Justice League, DC isn't about to mess with the creative team as long as the sales hold up.

As for the rest, there are only a few standouts of note.  Wonder Woman got a creative boost from Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp, but the creators' final issue arrived this week and replacement writer James Robinson won't arrive for another six issues.  Dan Jurgens has been telling solid Superman stories once again in Action Comics, while Dan Abnett has been doing some serious worldbuilding in Aquaman although sales haven't been kind. Hopefully, that will change with the stunning work from new artist Stjepan Šejić.

An overall net loss of four books, but pretty much consistent.  The most noticeable losses here are both Green Lantern titles, which continue being unable to meet the high bar set by Geoff Johns before Flashpoint, and both Batgirl titles, which aren't as strong as Gail Simone's or even Cameron Stewart and Brent Fletcher's runs in The New 52.  Harley Quinn is exactly the same book I ended up dropping during The New 52 and the lower sales are beginning to reflect that I'm not the only one who wants a change.  

The good news about DC Rebirth is that one year later, none of the original books have been cancelled.  (Okay, All-Star Batman is ending, but that seems more of a creative decision rather than sales.)  However, the bad news is that a number of titles emphasizing diversity have failed to catch on and probably won't make it to 2018, such as Cyborg, Blue Beetle, New Super-Man, and Superwoman.  Also, DC still hasn't figured out that the only Hellblazer we want to read involves top-notch British creators telling stories of true horror that aren't watered down with "swearing" using skull symbols.  It seems odd though, that DC doesn't have anything lined up to replace these books yet, unless you count their upcoming Dark Matter line with the aforementioned New Challengers and Jim Lee's The Immortal Men.

Oh, and I should mention that the main reason DC Rebirth is performing so well is probably due to the superb initial offering of DC Universe: Rebirth #1, followed by more of DC recapturing what their readers enjoyed prior to The New 52.  Unlike Marvel, which remains clueless about what its core readership actually wants, DC learned from the mistakes of The New 52 and addressed those mistakes with an engaging mystery woven throughout the Rebirth era.  Even better, there's still more to come, with Geoff Johns wrapping up that mystery in Doomsday Clock, Snyder and Capullo returning for the Metal event, and teasing hints that the Justice Society of America and the Legion of Super-Heroes will finally be back in play relatively soon.

Once again, it's a great time to be a DC Comics fan.  On to Year Two!

Last night we took our regular month ending visit to Ground Zero For Crazy, the websites Salon dot com and Alex Jones' InfoWorld.  And man did we pick the right night. Jones was taking a break Thursday from his important work like exposing the secret conspiracy of how Hillary Clinton’s death squads (or the CIA) keep killing Trump pal, Roger Stone, to do some old-school space-alien X-Files craziness for a change. It was actually kind of nostalgic!

Jones’s guest, Robert David Steele, casually brought up the secret pedophile pleasure colonies on Mars that are the final destination for thousands of kidnapped children. (It's secret, that’s why there’s no evidence!).  After Steele explained that virtually all the kidnapped children have their bone marrow taken and used as a youth serum (oddly, he cited no clinical trials on that), Steele got to the real scandal that nobody dares talk about:
"This may strike your listeners as way out but we actually believe that there is a colony on Mars that is populated by children who were kidnapped and sent into space on a 20 year ride. So that once they get to Mars they have no alternative but to be slaves on the Mars colony. There’s all kinds of ..."
Unfortunately, before Steele could explain more about this Mars colony, like how long it’s been there, who runs it, and why there’s no trail of evidence from missing children reports to these secret rocket launches, Jones interrupted him. That’s a shame since we wanted to know more about those 20-year rocket trips, which apparently use prop planes, since NASA usually gets probes to Mars in under a year.  Or maybe it’s a trip to Mars plus 19 years of servitude, and then the pedophile colonists eat the now-adult victims. In any case, Jones had to share what HE knows about all of NASA’s trickery:

"Look, I know that 90 percent of the NASA missions are secret and I’ve been told by high level NASA engineers that you have no idea, there is so much stuff going on. But then it goes off into all that, that’s the kind of thing the media jumps on. But I know this: we see a bunch of mechanical wreckage on Mars and people say, “Oh look, it looks like mechanics.” They go, “Oh, you’re a conspiracy theorist.” Clearly they don’t want us looking into what is happening. Every time probes go over they turn them off. Well I don’t know about Mars bases, but I know they’ve created massive, thousands of different types of chimeras that are alien lifeforms on this earth now." 
Well, yeah. Everyone knows about the alien chimera lifeforms, DUH! But as expected,  NASA quickly denied the rumor.  We actually rather missed the good old bugfuck-crazy version of Alex Jones, the guy who’s worried about the Gay Bomb that’s Turning all the Frogs Gay and the New World Order plot to replace most of humanity with cyborg slaves. At least that nonsense is sort of harmless, as opposed to inciting idiots to harass the parents of slain Sandy Hook School Children.

i feel like i remember her saying that she wasn't interested a while ago, but i guess things change, and i'm very interested to see how she looks in a fight. ronda had immediate success because of her grappling and we can only assume that kayla is on a similar level there, the question will be her striking. the fact that she's only 27 is a big plus for her outlook and she'll be fighting in a very thin division at 145 so she could have immediate impact. hopefully she can make some waves and convince more judoka's (and girls from other contact sports) to make the transition to mma so 145 can really get going eventually. this is just a random thought, but if she looks good in her first couple fights then i think it'd be interesting to see her fight gabi garcia and maybe even cyborg eventually.

I’m not going to pretend I know anything about contemporary Japanese splatter or J-splotation films; a term I am assuming is only used outside Japan. I’ve seen “Versus” on one of those late night video store runs back when video stores were actually a thriving business. Ya, whippersnappers. Takashi Miike’s “Audition” is one of my favorite horror films period. I would have to hand in my film geek card if I hadn’t encountered “Battle Royale” at some point or another. But other than those films my knowledge of Japanese cinema, and in particular Japanese genre films, hits a roadblock in regards to anything after the 1970s.

So having the opportunity to see Yoshihiro Nishimura’s “Helldriver” (“Nihon bundan: Heru doraibâ”) was a welcome entrance into an unexplored tier of horror and exploitation cinema. In a way the lack of knowledge on these types of films was a blessing. Going into a movie experience without any presupposition is a rare thing given the aggressive pervasiveness of internet advertising and trailers. And having never seen “Tokyo Gore Police,” “Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl,” or any of Nishimura’s other films I was genuinely excited to get a taste of something inventive and new. I did know that any director/writer who used “vs.” or “gore” in their movie titles should have something to show for it. And let’s state the obvious; the cover has a heroine wielding a chainsaw katana powered by an engine mounted on her chest. I mean, are you fucking serious?! How could I not get into this?! So when I started up the film’s recent Blu-Ray release and was greeted with an introduction from Nishimura saying “The film has a lot of stuff in it” and “enjoy it with a beer or another ‘special beverage’” I was on board and more than happy to oblige.

“Helldriver” centers on Kika (Yumiko Hara), a lonely schoolgirl who endures the emotional and physical abuse of her mother Rika (Eihi Shiina) and uncle, who also happen to be sadistic serial killers. After returning home one day, Kika finds her mother and uncle butchering her paraplegic father’s legs in order to make hamburgers. Rika captures Kika, ripping her heart out in a manner that would make Mola Ram proud. Suddenly a meteorite carrying a large parasite that looks like a starfish strikes Rika. As the starfish attaches itself to Rika’s head, a strange fog begins to blanket the upper half of the Japanese archipelago, transforming those exposed to it into zombies. However, these zombies have also sprouted antennae-like horns out of their foreheads through which they receive messages from Rika, the new, improved, and still sociopathic “Zombie Queen”. In an attempt to control the infection, the government walls off the infected area while attempting to handle the struggles of overpopulation, resource scarcity, and the new elicit street drug manufactured from the zombie horns. Meanwhile, Kika’s body is recovered at the meteor site. Miraculously she is still alive...without a heart. (Still on board). As part of a secret military program to destroy the zombie population, Kika is transformed into a cyborg equipped with the aforementioned chainsaw sword. Along with a wilily group of criminals and survivors, Kika is forced to enter the North and destroy the “Zombie Queen”. Will the group survive the onslaught of crazy-ass and gore that is to come?

A plot synopsis barely scratches the surface of this little piece of insanity. Indeed, the film is only marginally concerned with its plot and seems to use it specifically to make lackluster, shallow references to other films. The more constructive strategy here is to ask if “Helldriver” delivers that slice of inventive goretastic filmmaking I was craving. Unfortunately the answer is not quite, though it is certainly not through lack of effort. Firstly, despite utilizing a female lead protagonist, the film maintains a mean misogynist tone which enjoys a zombie nipple-eating scene a bit too much and portrays women in roles of authority as plain crazy or kills them off. And while the film presents a fairly constant flow of the red stuff, the lack of a counter balance in tone or pace produces messy results. Rather we are given a sluggishly delirious film that begins to lose its punch regardless of how hard it tries to maintain an intense pace with constant displays of lurid subject matter. What we get is something like a two-hour montage of zombie chainsaw fight sequences flatly lit by whatever color gel the crew had on set that day.

But to be fair this characterization speaks to the films strengths as well as its weaknesses. The film is perhaps best described as an homage to the power of gore as a visually aesthetic tool. Fight sequences are only briefly interrupted by exposition and logical rules set up earlier in the film are either ignored or changed at will to make sure a fight scene will be even more bizarre. And while the film is about 30 minutes overlong, there are enough “what-the-fuck” moments peppered throughout to keep a group of people engaged and rowdy. Though the film shows its budgetary strings regularly, Nishimura does not let that slow down the tide of weird set designs, costuming choices, and zombie encounters. Nishimura’s extensive career in special effects make-up departments certainly has helped in cramming “Helldriver” to the gills with all matter of viscera.

We often hear in film criticism the lauding of lean, non-excessive, tightly structured films. I don’t mean in the sense of length or the amount of spectacle but in the economic tethering of plotting, character, and action. However movies like “Helldriver” are specifically about that particular type of fat and in this sense that is where “Helldriver’s” place in the world of movies can be found. This is a film that revels in and seeks to create those rare, novel moments of excess for an audience and is unashamed to do so.

"Here is a moral rule: You can either be cheery or you can describe the universe as an empty, echoing void where human beings have no inherent value" argues Michael Gerson, writer with the Washington Post Writers Group. 

In “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari, the author posits that for the last few hundred years, there has been a successful alliance between scientific thought and humanism — a philosophy placing human feelings, happiness and choice at the center of the ethical universe.

Much analysis of Yuval Harari’s brilliant new book, “Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow,” focuses on the harrowing dystopia he anticipates. In this vision, a small, geeky elite gains the ability to use biological and cyborg engineering to become something beyond human.

It may “upgrade itself step by step, merging with robots and computers in the process, until our descendants will look back and realize that they are no longer the kind of animal that wrote the Bible (or) built the Great Wall of China.” This would necessarily involve the concentration of data, wealth and power, creating “unprecedented social inequality.”

“In the early 21st century,” argues Harari, “the train of progress is again pulling out of the station — and this will probably be the last train ever to leave the station called Homo sapiens.”
Few of us Homo sapiens are anxious to take such a trip, apart from some “dataists” who pant for the apocalypse. But, as Harari repeatedly insists, the prophet’s job is really an impossible one. Someone living in the 12th century would know most of what the 13th century might have to offer. Given the pace of change in our time, the 22nd century is almost unimaginable.

Yet the predictions are not the most interesting bits of the book. It is important primarily for what it says about the present. For the past few hundred years, in Harari’s telling, there has been a successful alliance between scientific thought and humanism — a philosophy placing human feelings, happiness and choice at the center of the ethical universe. With the death of God and the denial of transcendent rules, some predicted social chaos and collapse. Instead, science and humanism (with an assist from capitalism) delivered unprecedented health and comfort.

This progress has involved an implicit agreement, “In exchange for power,” says Harari, “the modern deal expects us to give up meaning.”

It is Harari’s thesis, however, that the alliance of science and humanism is breaking down, with the former consuming the latter. Science, argues Harari, revealed humans as animals on the mental spectrum, then as biochemical processes, and now as outdated organic algorithms. We have “opened up the Sapiens black box” and “discovered there neither soul, nor free will, nor ‘self’ — but only genes, hormones and neurons.”

Nobody's Leaving This World Tonight

The Best of 2011

The new devices first accelerate the old ways, and then things change. I used to write about music on the internet. People still do, in a sense, but it's a different sense. We are now, collectively, exploring the idea that quantitative and qualitative are a quantitative distinction. Instead of a few people writing 3000 words each, we have thousands of people writing a few words each. This is clearly worse if you like to read about music, but if writing about music was a means to an end, then maybe more data is a better means. The end, the goal, the dream, is that with data and logic we can reveal the associative flow that we have always sensed inhered in the music itself. The dream, the hope, the aspiration, is that our thus-mediated self can enter into the flow. The theory, the thought experiment, the conceit, is that measure by measure, drop by drop, these sounds we love can never stop.

I have believed this to be somehow possible since, more or less, my first hour downloading and printing a Gary Numan discography off of Usenet. I spent a decade obsessively pursuing music discovery as literature, in a sort of parallel denial, but there was always data, and more data, and eventually it had to add up to something.

And so music discovery has become math, and I have become a conductor of numbers and correlations, and a bookkeeper of our itemized helplessness. And maybe it seems like we are supposed to fear this, these computers now listening to our music for us, but like many fears, this is a mistake of context. The computers aren't listening to music instead of us. The logarithms lead us to the start of a song, where we might not otherwise have ever arrived, but then the song starts and the mediation dissolves, and the magic power of the music pours straight into us the way it always has.

Metal Albums


Blood Stain Child: Epsilon

I was never really a solipsist, any more than I was a nihilist or an anarchist or any other show-off meta-philosophy, any more than I am a viking or a cyborg or a Satanist. These are toy ideas in the best sense of "toy", fabrications of possibility for the purpose of contrast or hope. But if I were a solipsist, a universe arranged for my insulation could hardly do much better than cross-breeding European death metal and Japanese trance-pop. You learn something interesting about people who claimed to love being shocked when they flinch at being surprised. Shallowness, in the end, is merely a dimension. We have learned to make our shells so hard, and so shiny, that sometimes their thickness is gloriously immaterial.


Elizium: Relief by the Sun

But it goes both ways, or all three ways, or however many dimensions it is that you hold these songs to travel through. Elizium are as warm as Blood Stain Child are ice-mooned, measured where BSC are quantized, roaring where they chirp, open-hearted over airlocked. But these are tactical contrasts, I think, not antitheses. The problem with materialism is not that it values objects, it's that it mis-values objects, that it detaches the objects from their implications. The point of a cadence is not a function of the particular composition of its metronome. These paths are lined with soil and metal, stone and airwaves, flittering lights and movable hearths.


Unleash the Archers: Demons of the Astrowaste

This was the year I finally stopped going to record stores to buy music. This was, for much of my life, much of my life. But it had long since ceased to be functionally necessary, and then it had slowly ceased to be particularly helpful, and eventually it mostly stopped even being possible. I have personally seen material copies of only three of the twenty albums on these two metal lists, although Unleash the Archers' website claims they could mail you one of this. But I was never going to discover this band in a physical store. They're unsigned, they're from another country, and their name and art both make them look like refugees from a late 80s Metal Blade compilation that maybe suffered a last-minute Manowar cancellation. But none of this matters very much anymore. I couldn't possibly tell you why I spent the click or two necessary to follow some random link and hear a few seconds of this band. This year I listened to a few seconds of literally hundreds of bands about which I knew basically nothing. Much of the time, a few seconds later I knew one more thing about them, and that was enough. But 7 of these 10 astonishing albums began their life with me in just about this way, and maybe none were more surprising than Unleash the Archers, who turn out to be a sort of frenetically but unceremoniously epic post-ironic alt-power-metal cross between Gamma Ray and Madder Mortem, or maybe between Veruca Salt and Fates Warning. I miss record stores a little, too, but I would rather live this way.


Pantheist: Pantheist

There are forms of metal with most possible virtues, but quiet subtlety is chronically underrepresented, superfically because metal is about loudness and extremity, but maybe more inherently because the genre tends to evolve by extrapolation, rather than interpolation, and so each new thing is usually some earlier thing done faster or angrier or louder or more something. But it can go the other way. So while most of the threads of doom metal curve off into whisper-ambient funeral doom, or Sunn O))) drone or various formulations of stoner sludge, Pantheist take up the trajectory from Black Sabbath off through Cathedral, and follow it back towards grace and songcraft, like an anticipatory soundtrack for a new Harold and Maude cross-written into The Sandman.


Subway to Sally: Schwarz In Schwarz

We had a little metal listening club on I Love Music for a while last year. Each week somebody would pick a couple albums, and a group of us would try to listen to them all the way through. I'd never heard of Subway to Sally when somebody picked one of their albums for a week of formative early folk-metal, and I wasn't even entirely charmed by the punk/polka thump of it, but at least afterwards I knew who they were, so I gave this album its :10 chance when I came across it, just to see what it meant that they were still around. What it means, to me, is that somebody went back and figured out how to separate the energizing parts of old Skyclad from the goofy ones, and replace the latter with the least martial components of Neue Deutsche Härte. If we're rewriting movies via soundtrack shift, this is the one for morphing Katja von Garnier's Bandits halfway into Tom Tykwer's Heaven.


Dornenreich: Flammentriebe

And extrapolate from Subway to Sally, splintering the marching rhythms into stabbing atmospherics, smearing the rock urgency into pagan catharsis, and redeploying the violins from Dexy's reels towards Nymanesque psycho-cartography, and you get an alternate folk-art-metal decomposition that, if this were Skyclad, would give them a style arc of almost Talk Talk-like scope.


Jesu: Ascension

Part of the point of this obdurate segmentation of my musical world into metal and not is that almost anything you contain and inhabit can react by expanding into all the implied and absent niches. You can remake an entire musical world inside of any worthy genre. Or maybe that's just what I mean by "genre": a varietal microcosm. And thus Jesu has become my metal world's Low, and it's only when I listen to the two in very quick succession that the visceral identification wavers. Minimal, haunted, cresting, frail and grand, post-anthemic and elemental.


Terra Tenebrosa: The Tunnels

The mole people have their own oblique, guttural, chittering music. It is meant, I think, mostly for instilling nightmares in voles, and some kind of cabalistic subsonic thrall-herding of gray owls.


Thy Catafalque: Rengeteg

Somebody must have figured that if you played a kid a steady-enough stream of Jean Michel Jarre, Gogol Bordello and 69 Love Songs over an old shortwave, it would wean him off metal. It didn't work.


Lifelover: Sjukdom

I don't care how audibly life-affirming your pretend-nihilistic music is, if you miss your own point and actually kill yourself, you go to the bottom of the list. Those are the rules.

Wolfchant: "Black Fire" (from Call of the Black Winds)

Another measure of a good genre is that it should be possible to redeem its clichés by instantiating all of them at once.


Avven: "Ros" (from Kastalija)

I feel a tiny bit bad for sticking to my metal-only Pazz & Jop voting in the singles poll, where I thus almost never agree with anybody at all. But then there are songs like this galloping, roaring, square-dance riot by an unsigned Hungarian band, who appear to have filmed the video for it in somebody's grandparents' attic while maybe wearing some of their clothes, and for a couple minutes I feel again like you are responsible for what you witness, whether anybody else ever sees it or not.


Heretoir: "Fatigue" (from Heretoir)

When Matt and Clare restart Sarah as a shoegaze-metal label (with release numbering restarting from 666, of course), Heretoir will be the second band they approach, and the first to sign.


Alcest: "Elévation (Re-recorded)" (from Le Secret (Reissue))

But we shall none of us forget that Alcest invented the form, and can invent it over again any time they feel like it.


Agrypnie: "Augenblick" (from Asche)

What you get if you make your metal band by crushing up and reassembling Big Country's "Porrohman".


Frijgard: "Frijgard" (from Nebelwacht)

Sure, when you see a forced march through Hell filmed in slow motion, with Sarah McLachlan singing "Into the Fire", it seems very glamorous and dramatic. Different story when you have to do it yourself, in bad shoes.


Dalriada: "Mennyei Harang" (from Ígéret)

My current one-song explanation of folk metal.


Arven: "Dark Red Desire" (from Music of Light)

My current one-song explanation of dragon-princess metal, which is a genre I just made up, but which I hope all the bands currently failing to be Nightwish will seriously consider for next year, because it's easier, and it's often more fun to be really good at something kind of easy than really mediocre at something extremely hard that somebody else is already doing well.


Oak Pantheon: "Architect of the Void Part II" (from The Void)

My current one-song explanation of American temperate-rain-forest metal, which is a real thing even if I just made up the name and half the bands actually live in Minnesota.


Kampfar: "Bergtatt (In D Major)" (from Mare)

Five and a half minutes of relentless strangled chorus, like Ragnarok re-cut for Sportscenter. Which, arguably, is what much of metal cheerfully aspires to: the Apocalypse, but without all the commercials and boring penalty-rule deliberations and timeouts.

Airborne Toxic Event: All at Once

I couldn't get away from "Sometime Around Midnight", and eventually it grew on me a little, but not enough to explain how thoroughly and repeatedly overwhelmed I've been by this next record, as expansive and ambitious a Rock Album as any in the Long, Grand, and Somewhat Outmoded Tradition of such things. It's both pointless and foolish to predict posterity, and my cheerfully pointlessly foolish prediction is that we'll look back on this like we look back on Jailbreak and Every Picture Tells a Story and The Joshua Tree. Or maybe I only mean that my heart is still willing to admit more of these, and the undecided part of this prediction is not the record or the future but the we. This we believes in choruses and sighs, and guitars that ping like Big Country, and drums that thump instead of swing, and people singing like they need to hear what they believe echoing around them more than they fear cowards' doubts. This we is in love, recursively, with what it sounds like to be in love with love with love with everything. This we inhabits the past and future by the involuntary aching expedient of timelessness.


Gazelle Twin: The Entire City

Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Björk all had new albums this year, but the one that made me feel the most like they once did, and like in their turns Jane Sibbery and Laurie Anderson and Life Without Buildings and Bat for Lashes all have, was this lush, stuttering, murky, muted, secret puzzle-logic poem of a record, like flannel starlight reflected off the uncanny line where matte-finish ocean touches rain-dulled streets, like a reminder that dance music can be the simple conversion of fog-wisp dreams into patterned motion, and that clockwork is only one of many species of mechanism.


Joy Formidable: The Big Roar

In which we return to the story began by Siouxsie and Curve and Sleeper and Theaudience and discover that it has new chapters every bit as swirlingly, crashingly thrilling as the old.


Emmylou Harris: Hard Bargain

But part of what I hear in what I love, and part of what I mean by love, is anticipation of forgetting, is lingering in the immanent intrinsic sadness of moments. And if some of these materializations are oblique and cryptic, still others are heartbreakingly plain. Emmylou's ethereal voice ghosts over lost roads and shrouded mornings like a memory of memory, and I am swept up in so precisely what it feels like to be alive against our skin.


Juliana Hatfield: There's Always Another Girl

There's still a universe, somewhere, where this is me. Take away my computers, perhaps, and the consolations of numbers, and an atheist's defiant faith in Eternity if for nothing more than a sense of proportion, and under it I think there wait versions of all these frailties and expectations. There is a map we could draw, I expect, of Juliana and my lives, from the night the Blake Babies played in my college dining hall, and the lines twine around each other like a ballet in adrift, lonely RNA. And I hear myself in this singing, and my name in the liner notes is half the mundane marker of my support for the idea that art must obey its own dictates of scale, and half a private joke between me and some other self.

We underrate Young Adult fiction, I think, much like we have underrated Science Fiction and Heavy Metal and any system with its own stubbornly earnest internal rules. But dismissing these things misses the crucial point that art need not necessarily speak to us as we are. So if M83 are like a mirror-Earth Tears for Fears without the angst, or children of the Human League born into a world that has never not known disco, or a Peter Pan to carry Talk Talk and Propaganda away to the safety of the island of Perpetual Arpeggiators, then I am perfectly willing to read stories of what it felt like to not know all this miserable and intractable and portentious grownup nonsense yet, and emininently pleased to melt into this sprawling, radiantly naïve accumulation of everything every other band like this pretends to be above.


Low: C'mon

Tori and Kate's albums slid into and out of my life without much ceremony, which I wouldn't have necessarily thought possible, and Low's sank this far. But no farther. There was a long period where every new Low album made me change my understanding of something, usually them but by no means always, and this one doesn't, but in some ways it's almost as fascinating and possibly even more encouraging to listen to Alan and Mimi finding their way without any kind of quiet revolution. Because sometimes you won't.


The Sounds: Something to Die For

Blondie: Panic of Girls

There was an album this year that said The Human League on it, but it had, for me, no emotional connection at all to the synthpop charm of "Don't You Want Me" or "(Keep Feeling) Fascination". The Sounds came closer, following through on the retro feints of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Marina and the Diamonds and Metric to find out that the disused ways back into synthpop beepiness can also take you onwards past the Go-Go's and X-Ray Spex and Penetration and Berlin and M.

And Blondie, of course. There are probably some tedious logistical reasons why a Blondie/The Sounds tour could never happen, but my musical life plays in my head, not on stages, and in my head these two albums are jubillantly interlaced, as if separated, as they in fact are, by nothing but meaningless distance.

          From Cyborgs to Hacktivists: Postfeminist Disobedience and Virtual Communities

For many the term postfeminist might call to mind the vanilla pleasures of metrosexuality, webcams, online soaps, and blog culture, but, for me, a 40-something cyberfeminist scholar, curator and some time activist, the politically-minded feminist texts I work with are in fact dyed-in-the-wool postfeminist ones that occupy a different place on the postfeminism continuum from those more loudly-lauded, lighter confections. Usually given a bad rap by the media, postfeminism has been accused of being antifeminist, whereas it is instead what the next wave of second wave feminism has become. Its name is not a marker or movement that intends to imply that feminism is dead and gone, any more than Donna Haraway’s “postgender” and N. Katherine Hayles’ “posthuman” mean the death of those old shoes. As Ann Brooks puts it in Postfeminisms, “the concept of `post’ implies a process of ongoing transformation and change” (1). Postfeminism is that indicator that shows us the organism formerly known as feminism has grown into something far more complex than its liberal origins would lead us to expect.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, second wave feminism, which had spoken predominantly from and to a position of white middle class privilege, began to fracture to include a broader chorus of voices, classes, and races. Postfeminism or, more exactly, postfeminisms have expanded to include a multitude of situated perspectives within the context of postmodern thinking, and have swelled to embrace the new emphasis on what Michèle Barrett identified in 1992 (the year that the World Wide Web was born) as “fluidity and contingency” - features that are the trademark stock in trade of the cyber age. Barrett believed feminism’s paradigm shift to be the result of a new interest in culture that in turn gave rise to a whole new collectivity of subjectivities. It is no accident that this shift coincided with the advent of a technology that foregrounded networked communications. It was only a few years earlier, in the fledgling days of the personal computer back when the Internet was still a vehicle predominantly for hackers and technogeeks, that Haraway first articulated a politics of connectivity for women in the context of these new technologies. In her “Cyborg Manifesto” Haraway’s half-woman, half-machine revels in the confusion of body boundaries and fractures all sense of an originary unity or simplex gender through embracing the cyborg as a model: a being who revels in discursivity, multiplicity, hybridity, and perversity. As the Web has evolved, it has become something of a gene pool for creative explorations of sexualities, subjectivities and identities - and has proved to be as liberating for men as for women in that regard. Cyberfeminist scholar Sadie Plant even argues for the feminizing influence of technology in a connected age. Without a doubt, though, this new technology’s most important role has been that of facilitating communication.

 “cyberfeminism is post-feminist” (76) Cyberfeminism was born at a particular moment in time, 1992, simultaneously at three different points on the globe. In Canada, Nancy Paterson, a celebrated high tech installation artist, penned an article called “Cyberfeminism” for Stacy Horn’s Echo Gopher server. In Australia, VNS Matrix (Josephine Starrs, Julianne Pierce, Francesca da Rimini and Virginia Barratt) coined the term to label their radical feminist acts and their blatantly viral agenda: to insert women, bodily fluids, and political consciousness into electronic spaces. That same year, British cultural theorist Sadie Plant chose the same term to describe her recipe for defining the feminizing influence of technology on western society and its inhabitants.

Connectivity has been called the genius of feminism by theorist Robin Morgan (53), and this genius is being realized in electronic spaces and texts in more complex ways than in any other medium to date. Connectivity is the poster child of the postfeminist universe, which is why the first cyberfeminist collective, VNS Matrix, chose the image of the matrix - the cosmic womb - as its symbol The Australian collective VNS Matrix announced its inception with a rallying cry called the “Cyberfeminist Manifesto”:
We are the modern cunt
positive anti-reason
unbounded unleashed unforgiving
we see art with our cunt we make art with our cunt
we believe in jouissance madness holiness and poetry
we are the virus of the new world disorder
rupturing the symbolic from within
saboteurs of big daddy mainframe
the clitoris is a direct line to the matrix
terminators of the moral code
mercenaries of slime
go down on the altar of abjection
sucking the visceral temple we speak in tongues
infiltrating disrupting disseminating
corrupting the discourse/we are the future cunt
Its separatist nature bears a resemblance to philosophies put forward by hackers.
. Another cyberfeminist collective, the Old Boys’ Network, defined its local chapters as “nodes” that “collide, disintegrate, regenerate, engage, disembody, reform, collapse, renew, abandon, revise, revitalize, and expand” (OBN FAQ 7). These structural and mechanical concerns are not accidental. Postfeminisms do not inhabit a network; they are the network of feminist discourse in virtual space and they are at their best when they are helping to forge communities of practice. In its incarnation most familiar to ebr ‘s readers, the electronic, hyperlinked text is both a narratological structure and the means of navigation in space and time. In the webbed space of hyperlinked fiction, the pregnant gaps between the nodes are at least as important as the textual nodes themselves. The nodes exist in conjunction with the dynamic space of the journey and cannot be discussed in isolation. So with the newest literary forms of the postfeminist universe. They cannot be separated from the communities and material praxes that they both engender and nurture on and off the Web.

In the cyberfeminist corner of the postfeminist universe, girl gamers such as Brenda Laurel and Mary Flanagan immediately spring to mind; so too do techno-performers such as Laurie Anderson and Coco Fusco, and new media artists such as Mez or Olia Lialina, but the most important and distinctive Web-native postfeminist form is, I would argue, hacktivism. The term was first coined in 1998 The rallying cry of hackers has long been “information wants to be free.” to describe an emerging hybrid form that united the best attributes of peaceful social protest - activism - and tech-savvy online civil disobedience - hackerism The term “hacktivism” has been attributed to a Toronto-based hacker who goes by the handle of Oxblood Ruffin.. It is a solution-oriented form of political action that inserts bodies and media-based dissent into real time material concerns. It should not be confused with its adolescent and illegal cousins, cractivism - code cracking, vandalism, data blockades (DDos) and the loss of digital data - or cyberterrorism - acts and agents of wanton destruction including worms and viruses. One of its trademark features is that the Web cannot contain hacktivism’s flows, allowing it to spill out into the world in the form of political protest at WTO and G8 events, for example, and in books, pamphlets, net.art, and performance art.

Hacktivism as a praxis was born in December 1997 when Critical Art Ensemble Critical Art Ensemble has been very much in the news lately since one of its members, Steve Kurtz, a professor in the Department of Art at SUNY Buffalo, was arrested on 12 May 2004 and charged with bioterrorism under the American Anti-Terrorism Act. These trumped up and widely protested charges have resulted in the FBI appropriating CAE’s materials and equipment used for testing for the presence of genetically- modified DNA - the tools CAE uses in creating their political art. member and software engineer Carmin Karasic was so appalled by the events of the Acteal Massacre - 45 Zapatistas were murdered at the hands of the Mexican government - that she set out to create a Web interface that would perform political protest as an aesthetic act. Three other Critical Art Ensemble members joined her in forming a new collective they named the Electronic Disturbance Theatre. (The group’s name is drawn from the concept of civil disobedience first proposed by Henry David Thoreau.) Their electronic civil disobedience engine is named FloodNet; funded by RTMark and launched in September 1998, it is Karasic’s brainchild in her war against injustice. Filling the browser page with the names of the dead, this activism tool “would access the page for Mexico’s President Zedillo seeking bogus addresses, so the browser would return messages like “human_rights not found on this server” (Cassell). Unlike the attacks launched by cracktivists, no damage is done by this software agent. When the Electronic Disturbance Theatre alerts its “online activists to `commence flooding!’” they visit EDT’s website and click on FloodNet’s icon (Harmon). The software then directs their browser to the target, and cues the same page to load over and over again.

As a postfeminist work, it is no accident that FloodNet must function as a community-based performance:

FloodNet’s action only drew its validity from the number of people showing support. “It was only actualized through thousands and thousands of participants,” she remembers. “It was meaningless without the masses.” Popular support transforms a random act of vandalism into a show of presence, Karasic argues. “This is an important difference between the single hacker/hacktivist who takes down a server with a single script” (qtd. in Cassell).

Similar to the disruptive aestheticization of codework by the Dutch trio jodi.org, Karasic sees her collectivity interface as something more closely akin to “conceptual art” than to cyberterrorism (Harmon). No one and no data are harmed in these `attacks,’ but websites are effectively shut down while the protest is being transmitted.

Advancing human rights through the electronic media is also the purview of another collective, a cyberfeminist one called subRosa. It is currently comprised of Laleh Mehran, Hyla Willis, Steffi Domike, Lucia Sommer, and Faith Wilding. It was also formed in the fall of 1998 - around the same time that Karasic was vowing to respond to Mexican excesses with FloodNet. Donna Haraway was the first to identify science as one of the most insidious cultural forms women needed to address to regain control of their bodies; subRosa follows in that tradition. subRosa uses its art to critique “the relationships between digital technologies, biotechnologies and women’s bodies/lives/work” (Griffis). The goal of these hacktivists, akin to the Electronic Disturbance Theatre’s, is the creation of communities, what they call “female affiliations that respect difference and create productive projects in solidarity with others who are working on similar ones” (Griffis).

Embracing bell hooks’ definition of feminism as that which seeks to eradicate ideologies of domination (qtd in Griffis), subRosa undertakes projects of activism and public education on topics as wide-ranging as eugenics, Frankenfoods, stem cell and cloning research, and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Seeing their purpose as a pedagogical one, they launch inclusive electronic campaigns, publish pamphlets and books, and travel out into (particularly third world) communities to perform their topical art. These are what they call resistant projects, tactical cyberfeminist ones, and situational information theatre: “As cyberfeminists and artists we are using the framework of participatory performance as an information theatre of pedagogical art that models various tactics for intervening and commenting on the seductive representations of the flesh machine” (subRosa). One of the keys to their successful distribution of information is their willingness to mix media and cross boundaries, producing their art and materials in a plethora of formats contextually situated for their audiences. Like FloodNet’s participatory form, subRosa’s mode of information distribution is reproducible, for it argues “[i]n the digital age, resistant cultural producers can embrace recombinance for subversive ends” (subRosa).

All of this may seem somewhat removed from the electronic book and literary traditions, but when postfeminisms meet the new media they encourage these kinds of pleasures in the confusion of boundaries between bodies, texts, technologies, politics, and cultures. In a hyperlinked age when the only true path through a text is a personal journey, the many roads of postfeminism show that comminglings of radical politics and material concerns are alive and well in both the virtual and real worlds. How effective these hacktivist actions are is difficult to measure, but they are remarkable as tools for global mobilization and peaceful protest. It is clear that they are very effective at allowing women’s voices to be heard.

I'm one tough cookie. I tend to keep it together in almost every situation. I am very good in a crisis (God knows I've had enough of those). I don't flinch at the sight of blood. My mother calls me "the rock" of the family. I come from a long line of stoics. Cicero would have loved me.

But for the second time yesterday, I freakin' cried during a Disney animated movie. The first time I was 12 and Mufasa died. I think I was allowed.

Yesterday we watched the Princess and the Frog (finally). It was so beautifully done. I won't tell you when I cried in case you haven't watched it, but I was a sopping mess. It was brutal. My sister laughed at me. My mother laughed at me. I'm pretty sure the neighbourhood would have laughed at me too.

I'm growing soft in my old age. And for a long time I fought that tooth and nail. But you know what? I'm just going to have to be okay with it. I'm just going to have to be okay with the fact that I'm not entirely made of stone.

I still have no emotional response to puppies and babies, but I'm starting to doubt my ability to keep it together at all times. Who knows. I might start watching chick flicks one day soon (Help me when I do!). And I guess that's what happens when you're not a cyborg.

I'm mellowing out. It was inevitable. Even stone changes over time. I'll just have to be okay with it. There is nothing wrong with it, it's just a different experience. That's all. Right, that's going to have to do as an explanation for now. But I still refuse to turn into one of "those" girls!

What do you think crying denotes? Is it a characteristic of emotional strength? Is it weakness? Is it neither?

On August 12, 2017 from 14:00 to 22:00 there will be a technoshamanism meeting in Dome of Visions, Aarhus, Denmark.

The purpose of the meeting is to unite people who are interested in the combination of DIY technologies such as free software and permaculture with ancestral, ancestorfuturist and shamanistic practices. We are calling all the cyborgs, witches, heretics, technoshamans, programmers, hackers, artists, alchemists, thinkers and everyone who might be curious to join us and explore the possiblities of combining ancestral and indigenous worldviews with the looming disasters of the anthropocene.

If you feel attracted by the combination of these terms, techno + shamanism and ancestrality + futurism and if you’re worried about the destruction of the Earth and the hegemony of capital and neoliberal ontologies, this event is for you. In view of Aarhus’ slogan as European Cultural Capital of 2017, the theme of this event could be: Rethink ancestrality and technology!

We welcome all proposals for rituals, musical and artistic performances, talks, discussions and technological workshops. Please send your proposal to xamanismotecnologico@gmail.com.

The proposal needs to be short (250 words) with your web site (if any) and a short bio.



The verbal talks will be structured as roundtable discussions with several participants which are recorded and simultaneously live streamed as Internet radio.

Tecnoshamanism is an international network for people interested in living out their ideas in everyday life while focusing on open science, open technology, free and DIY cosmological visions and feel the necessity of maintaining a strong connection to the Earth as a living, ecological organism.

In recent years, we have had meetings in Spain, England, Denmark, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Germany, and Switzerland. In November 2016, we had the II International Festival of Tecnoxamanism in the indigenous Pataxó village of Pará in Bahia, Brazil. The purpoose of this meeting is to discuss technoshamanism as outlined above and to strengthen and grow this network, hopefully reaching out to new partners in Denmark and beyond. The network is based in Brazil but draws inspiration from all over the world.

Ärzte, Ökonomen, Politiker, Polizisten uvm. fiebern der Entwicklung der Nanotechnologie entgegen. Diese Technologie wird in Zukunft unser Leben "reduzieren". Das Frauenhofer Institut entwickelt seit ein paar Jahren, das BAM (Body Area Network). Es steht für eine drahtlose Übertragungstechnologie, von am oder im Körper getragenden Sensoren, über das Internet zu einem z.B. medizinischen Fachpersonal. Träger wären die Nanoroboter, die als Chips in Kleidung oder direkt in die Blutbahn eingesetzt werden können. Sie könnten Daten direkt aus unserem Körper in eine Onlinedatenbank übermitteln. Ihre Energie beziehen sie aus dem Blutzucker oder der Bewegung der Muskulatur. Die Idee des Cyborgs ist also gar nicht so fern.

Ambientato nel XXI secolo Ghost in the Shell è in superficie un thriller di spionaggio futuristico che segue le imprese del maggiore Motoko Kusanagi, membro della Nona Sezione, una squadra speciale di operazioni in incognito della Commissione nazionale di pubblica sicurezza giapponese specializzata nel combattere crimini legati alla tecnologia. Sebbene tecnicamente sia pari grado agli altri membri, Kusanagi ricopre il ruolo di leader della squadra e viene solitatamente chiamata maggiore a causa del suo passato rango nelle forze armate. Il Ghost è l'istinto non mediato dai calcoli. Lo sviluppo dell'intelligenza artificiale ed un'onnipresente rete computerizzata sono il palcoscenico per la rivoluzione dell'identità umana e della unicità di sé stessi. In particolare il manga affronta direttamente queste problematiche: Kusanagi ed i suoi colleghi devono affrontare minacce esterne così come soffrire conflitti interni dovuti alle loro proprie nature.

"Each day you must choose: the pain of discipline, or the pain of regret."This is one of the many mantras that Coach Eric Mangini has painted in large, intimidating block letters, strategically located around the Cleveland Browns facility. Players are expected to have all of these mantras memorized. During team meetings, Mangini will call on a player, who must stand up and face a dreaded interrogation. "There is a quote written above the door to the locker room, what does it say and who said it?" Better get it verbatim. "What coverage do the Titans like to play in the red zone on third-and-long vs. our 11 personnel group?" Better know it. "Why are we choosing to punt on fourth-and-2 from their 38, down by six points, going in to halftime, when we have a field goal kicker who is good from 55 yards?" Better know that one, too.

This was the environment that existed in Cleveland last August. I was on the team for one week, toward the end of training camp. I was not around long enough to learn much about the playbook, or get to know my teammates, or get into any kind of football rhythm, but it was plenty of time to get a feel for Mangini's coaching style and to see how his players reacted to it. From that very first meeting, certain things became very clear. Players had notes—pages and pages of hastily scribbled notes—laid out in front of them on their desks and on their laps. I didn't know why until Mangini called on a player, asked him to stand, and quizzed him on extremely arbitrary statistics about the team we were set to play that week. And this was preseason.

Mangini's football IQ is through the roof. His attention to detail is legendary, but—at least as of last summer—he had zero understanding of his audience. Getting the most out of a professional athlete does not involve filling his head with useless facts and statistics and probabilities, and filling him with fear of what may happen if he forgets them. When I was in Cleveland, I saw an extremely talented football team—big, fast, strong athletes who were in great physical shape—who hated playing football there. All of them did. The facility was newly remodeled, outfitted with high ceilings and industrial steel. It felt cold. People walked around that place as if they were shuffling through a mausoleum. Players looked emotionally drained. Granted, it was training camp. Training camp is hard wherever you are. But these men were not just weak of body, they were weak of spirit, having been stripped of their manhood almost daily as Mangini tried to create 53 perfect cyborg football players.

The same thing is happening in Denver, where Josh McDaniels is making another crop of freakishly talented football players hate their jobs. The result—no big surprise here—is a bad football team. That's what the Browns have been under Mangini and what the Broncos have been under McDaniels.

The psychology goes like this: Players used to love the game. They enjoyed their talent and had high self-esteem. If a coach comes along who makes them feel insecure and paranoid, they begin to hate the game. Then they begin to hate the man who made them hate the game. When they hate the man, they hate his agenda. His agenda, in this case, is an impersonal obsession with winning a football game, with (the perception is) little respect for the players who are doing the winning. The result: a player who doesn't care whether his team wins or loses. And it happens constantly.

The good coaches are malleable, open-minded, humble. The good coaches make it feel like it's our team, not his team. The good coaches understand that there is a fine line between being prepared and being confounded. The good coaches adjust their approach when they see 53 grown men ready to cry on a daily basis. These are the best athletes in the world. You don't have to run them into the ground and call them pussies. You simply have to turn them loose. Sure, you must do so intelligently, with the opposing team's strengths and weaknesses in mind. But you can't project your own pedantic, inactive analysis of the game onto the athletes who actually have to do it.

I'd like to think that someone as smart as Eric Mangini can learn from what has happened in Cleveland—that he could sense that his tactics weren't working. Perhaps the Browns' success over the last few games is an indication that Mangini has finally painted over those corny mantras and let his boys play. For the sake of my former teammates, at least, I hope that's what's going on.

As for public concern about the health of the players, the occasional gasps of horror about concussions are completely rhetorical, because there is no personal point of reference. People don't actually view these athletes as humans. They are Things I See on Television. I learned this long ago, when I started playing in Denver. When I would meet someone who knew I played in the NFL, their eyes would glaze over and they would start speaking to me as if I were visiting from another planet. I don't blame the fans for this. The NFL markets its players that way, as interchangeable superheroes. You see them on Sunday. The other six days of the week, they don't exist. They are there for your entertainment.

So, Josh, are you not entertained?

In theaters: Edgar Wright's long-awaited Baby Driver is a marvel of sound design, using its diagetic soundtrack and sound effects to create the visuals' syntax, with Wright bringing his attention to detail and sense of comic timing to what is this time technically an action drama. The story follows the character of Baby, a precision driver with tinnitus who must listen to music to drown out the noise and has been roped into a rash of burglaries that, as might be expected, go terribly wrong just as he's trying to pull himself out. It occurred to me that while Hollywood movies are credited for inventing, or at least over-using, the car chase, few of them are ever at once interesting and look real (as opposed to both Fast and Furious). It takes Hong Kong directors or Europeans to really hit some high notes with that type of action, it seems. All that to say the car chases in Baby Driver are INSANELY good. And while the plot, though not without its surprises, is simple and even familiar, its interesting characters and technical mastery hardly give you enough time to notice.

Netflix: Bong Joon Ho (The Host, Snowpiercer) could never be called subtle when it comes to his themes, and his Netflix original film, Okja, about the love between a little Korean farm girl and the eponymous giant superpig, is no different. It could be about any kind of livestock and consumer meat. But tonally, while he steadily gets us to a heavy-handed climax, the action, visuals, strange comic performances from the like of Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano and Jake Gyllenhall, keeps the audience in a state of amused delight until it's almost too late. And perhaps that unpredictability is what prevents it from turning into cheese. Okja is an adorable creature creation - like something out of Miyazaki, brought to life - and extremely well realized in terms of interaction with the real world. And as is often true with the best Korean directors, even shots of New York have a freshness. It's a beautifully designed film with an usual story that will probably tug at many a heart string. It didn't quite get to me personally, but there were salt-encrusted eyes in the room when the lights came up.

DVDs: To my surprise, Arrow's 4th season has turned out to be the best, or indeed the only one I've felt very enthusiastic about, even though the Island/past story has mostly felt like slow-moving filler. But I don't remember the show ever getting me as emotional as this season and the extremely desperate positions the characters were placed into, all become of the season's villain, Damien Darhk, played by the very entertaining Neal McDonough (though perhaps his portrayal isn't far enough from his Justified villain), and the introduction of proper magic to the CW DCU. At the 4-year-mark, the DVD extras are getting a little more scarce, but there are still deleted scenes, outtakes, and a very boring ComiCon panel, and three featurettes on key guest characters.

The Flash Season 2, contemporaneous with Arrow S4, follows the same formula. It front loads episodes that introduce characters heading for Legends of Tomorrow, then gets down to brass tacks, developing a super-evil villain and putting its heroes through hell, a hell from which not all of them may survive. It also introduces Earth-2 (or AN Earth-2), which becomes a source of a fair few new villains, which is cool. I'm less enthused by the tepid Jay Garrick-Caitlin Snow romance, no matter what its payoff is. I guess at this point, I can't quite stand Caitlin blubbering about something or other. That, and anything to do with time travel, because Barry invariably commits time crimes in the most bonehead manner whenever the show goes there. From what I understand, I'm in for some pain in Season 3. But mostly good despite my misgivings. The DVD has tons of extras, with featurettes and/or special effects featurettes on most episodes, two convention panels, an hour-long feature on Kevin Smith directing an episode, plus the usual deleted scenes and well-produced gag reel.

Doctor Who Titles: Edge of Destruction (on YouTube) is a 30-minute sci-fi/action short out of China, heaving on homemade CG effects, and sadly light on substance. The premise is pretty cool, combining the legend of the Small Goose Pagoda and alternate worlds, but in a half-hour packed with shoot-outs and Street Fighter-style kung fu, there's really no time to develop a story or characters (the protagonist has the most depth, but he's not all that deep anyway). End of the day, Edge feels like the kind of genre TV series they aired Saturday afternoons in the 90s. I did not then want to watch the 15-minute sequel, which is the most damning comment I could make. Promising, but fails to rise above the level of student film.
#The TARDIS lands in the film... near the Pagoda, and he's in charge of saving the hapless tour guide/"Alpha" from the mirror universe's cyborgs, and of course, all the technobabble. After he and the Ponds help the young man master his powers, they leave him to defend the interdimensional rift lest worse things slip out.
