          Sebastian Dröge: Writing GStreamer Elements in Rust (Part 4): Logging, COWs and Plugins

This is part 4, the older parts can be found here: part 1, part 2 and part 3

It’s been quite a while since the last update again, so I thought I should write about the biggest changes since last time again even if they’re mostly refactoring. They nonetheless show how Rust is a good match for writing GStreamer plugins.

Apart from actual code changes, also the code was relicensed from the LGPL-2 to a dual MIT-X11/Apache2 license to make everybody’s life a bit easier with regard to static linking and building new GStreamer plugins on top of this.

I’ll also speak about all this and more at RustFest.EU 2017 in Kiev on the 30th of April, together with Luis.

The next steps after all this will be to finally make the FLV demuxer feature-complete, for which all the base-work is already done now.

Logging

One thing that was missing so far and made debugging problems always a bit annoying was the missing integration with the GStreamer logging infrastructure. Adding println!() everywhere just to remove them again later gets boring after a while.

The GStreamer logging infrastructure is based, like many other solutions, on categories in which you log your messages and levels that describe the importance of the message (error, warning, info, …). Logging can be disabled at compile time, up to a specific level, and can also be enabled/disabled at runtime for each category to a specific level, and performance impact for disabled logging should be close to zero. This now has to be mapped somehow to Rust.

During last year’s “24 days of Rust” in December, slog was introduced (see this also for some overview how slog is used). And it seems like the perfect match here due to being able to implement new “output backends”, called a Drain in slog and very low performance impact. So how logging works now is that you create a Drain per GStreamer debug category (which will then create the category if needed), and all logging to that Drain goes directly to GStreamer:

// The None parameter is a GStreamer Element, which allows the logging system to
// print the element name and other things on the GStreamer side
// The 0 is for defining a color for the logging in that category
let logger = Logger::root(GstDebugDrain::new(None,
                                             "mycategory",
                                             0,
                                             "Some description"),
                                             None);
debug!(logger, "Some output with a number {}", 1);

With lazy_static we can then make sure that the Drain is only created once and can be used from multiple places.

All the implementation for the Drain can be found here, and it’s all rather straightforward plumbing. The interesting part here however is that slog makes sure that the message string and all its formatting arguments (the integer in the above example) are passed down to the Drain without doing any formatting. As such we can skip the whole formatting step if the category is not enabled or its level is too low, which gives us almost zero-cost logging for the cases when it is disabled. And of course slog also allows disabling logging up to a specific level at compile time via cargo’s features feature, making it really zero-cost if disabled at compile time.

Safe & simple Copy-On-Write

In GStreamer, buffers and similar objects are inheriting from a base class called GstMiniObject. This base class provides infrastructure for reference counting, copying (cloning) of the objects and a dynamic (at runtime, not to be confused with Rust’s COW type) Copy-On-Write mechanism (writable access requires a reference count of 1, or a copy has to be made). This is very similar to Rust’s Arc, which for a contained type that implements Clone provides the make_mut() and get_mut() functions that work the same way.

Now we can’t unfortunately use Arc directly here for wrapping the GStreamer types, as the reference counting is already done inside GStreamer and adding a second layer of reference counting on top is not going to make things work better. So there’s now a GstRc, which provides more or less the same API as Arc and wraps structs that implement the GstMiniObject trait. The latter provides GstRc functions for getting the raw pointer, swap the raw pointer and create new instances from a raw pointer. The actual structs for buffers and other types don’t do any reference counting or otherwise instance handling, and only have unsafe constructors. The general idea here is that they will never exist outside a GstRc, which will then can provide you with (mutable or not) references to them.

With all this we now have a way to let Rust do the reference counting for us and enforce the writability rules of the GStreamer API automatically without leaving any chance of doing things wrong. Compared to C where you have to do the reference counting yourself and could accidentally try to modify a non-writable (reference count > 1) object (which would give an assertion), this is a big improvement.

And as a bonus this is all completely without overhead: all that is passed around in the Rust code is (once compiled) the raw C pointer of the objects, and the functions calls directly map to the C functions too. Let’s take an example:

// This gives a GstRc
let mut buffer = Buffer::new_from_vec(vec![1, 2, 3, 4]).unwrap();

{ // A new block to keep the &mut Buffer scope (and mut borrow) small
  // This would fail (return None) if the buffer was not writable
  let buffer_ref = buffer.get_mut().unwrap();
  buffer_ref.set_pts(Some(1));
}

// After this the reference count will be 2
let mut buffer_copy = buffer.clone();

{
  // buffer.get_mut() would return None, the below creates a copy
  // of the buffer instead, which makes it writable again
  let buffer_copy_ref = buffer.make_mut().unwrap();
  buffer_copy_ref.set_pts(Some(2));
}

// Access to Buffer functions that only require a &mut Buffer can
// be done directly thanks to the Deref trait
assert_ne!(buffer.get_pts(), buffer_copy.get_pts());

After reading this code you might ask why DerefMut is not implemented in addition, which would then do make_mut() internally if needed and would allow getting around the extra method call. The reason for this is that make_mut() might do a (expensive!) copy, and as such DerefMut could do a copy implicitly without the code having any explicit indication that a copy might happen here. I would be worried that it could cause non-obvious performance problems.

The last change I’m going to write about today is that the repository was completely re-organized. There is now a base crate and separate plugin crates (e.g. gst-plugin-file). The former is a normal library crate and contains some C code and all the glue between GStreamer and Rust, the latter don’t contain a single line of C code (and no unsafe code either at this point) and compile to a standalone GStreamer plugin.

The only tricky bit here was generating the plugin entry point from pure Rust code. GStreamer requires a plugin to export a symbol with a specific name, which provides access to a description struct. As the struct also contains strings, and generating const static strings with ‘\0’ terminator is not too easy, this is still a bit ugly currently. With the upcoming changes in GStreamer 1.14 this will become better, as we can then just export a function that can dynamically allocate the strings and return the struct from there.

All the boilerplate for creating the plugin entry point is hidden by the plugin_define!() macro, which can then be used as follows (and you’ll understand what I mean with ugly ‘\0’ terminated strings then):

plugin_define!(b"rsfile\0",
               b"Rust File Plugin\0",
               plugin_init,
               b"1.0\0",
               b"MIT/X11\0",
               b"rsfile\0",
               b"rsfile\0",
               b"https://github.com/sdroege/rsplugin\0",
               b"2016-12-08\0");

As a side-note, handling multiple crates next to each other is very convenient with the workspace feature of cargo and the “build –all”, “doc –all” and “test –all” commands since 1.16.

          Updated Wiki: JobManager

Job Manager

Use this component to run sharepoint jobs from central administration or change a job schedule.
For instance:
  • You can run a full profile synchronization without needing stsadm
  • Jobs installed with a feature receiver can be changed, without having to change and re-deploy
  • When developing new jobs, you can run them on demand, rather than using a minute schedule (which may not be ideal)

Installation

Run the commands to install and deploy as needed. Or use central admin to deploy. The final command will generate correct navigation after the solution has been deployed.

cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\"
stsadm.exe -o addsolution -filename components2.jobmanager.wsp
stsadm.exe -o deploysolution -name components2.jobmanager.wsp -local -allowgacdeployment
stsadm.exe -o copyappbincontent

Configuration

This component can be found in the operations section of central administration

operations.jpg

The job list screen is that same as the normal job definition list screen

list.jpg

From the main screen you can perform these actions:

1. Change a job's schedule
2. Execute a job
3. Clone a job for one time execution
4. Clone a job for normal execution

If the job has a schedule, you can change all the properties based on the type.
Click OK to save the new schedule.

If you wish to call the execute method on the job, select a content database from the dropdown
Then click Execute.
This calls the Execute method on the SPJobDefinition
This does not update the last run date of the job.

The last two buttons, clone schedule and clone one-time, copy the job into a new definition, with the same details
The reason i chose to implement a job clone, was because i didnt want to change the original job.
Normally one time jobs can not be changed to scheduled and visa versa. This is a sharepoint limitation.
Cloning will show the job in the standard job definition lists, with (clone) in the title
These can be deleted from the main screen.
Cloned One-time schedule jobs will be run ASAP.

          There are no goodbyes
The following is my religion column for the Friday, June 18, 2010 issue of the Tribune & Georgia.

When my wife, Victoria, and I hiked the Appalachian Trail, we enjoyed a lot of single-serving friendships. As we were hiking north for six months, we often ran into someone hiking south. We would sometimes just nod and keep walking, but more typically a brief conversation would ensue. And in these brief snippets we would often just learn the basics of who someone was, where they were coming from and how far they were going.

We did use these short meetings to find out about folks further up ahead and to share news of others we had passed along the way. Then one such single serving friendship was transformative. A hiker I will never forget, whose name we never heard appeared out of a dense fog one morning to say that he decided that these brief exchanges didn’t have to start at the beginning “Hi, I’m Frank and this is my wife, Victoria.” Instead, we could begin in the middle. Then without a name or other introduction, he shared how the morning was more science fiction than trail fact and people just appeared from the fog as if transported from no where. With that, he vanished into that same fog and we learned to take conversations further, faster if we wanted to really benefit from our short-lived exchanges in days full of hiking. That briefest of conversations left us changed for the better.

This is my farewell column for the Tribune and Georgian and as such, the last brief conversation we will have through this newspaper. I am thankful for you, gentle readers. Many of you have been with me for the more than 200 columns I have written. We have been through a lot together since my first column “How much sin is too much to forgive?” debuted in this space on June 22, 2001 to wonder aloud about American terrorist Timothy McVeigh’s last minute confession.

Since then, the worldwide tragedy of September 11 and smaller, closer to home grief of dealing with the paper mill closing and taking with it hundreds of jobs as well as the many other events large and small have taken up our thoughts and been in our prayers. We have considered cloning, stem cell research, just war theory and the ethics of torture alongside forgiveness, stewardship and how to live more fully into the faith that is in us.

Writing a column can be a one-sided affair, with me off writing in my little office in my home in Sugarmill and y’all reading wherever you make time for the paper. There is no reason that the writing and the reading need intersect. But it has never worked that way in Camden County. I have often been stopped at Publix or WalMart or Blockbuster to continue a conversation begun in this column. Many readers have shared with me favorite thoughts, including the columns that were hung on the refrigerator or laminated. I have also enjoyed it when someone emailed to let me know how the follow-up discussion went in a Bible Study at their church.

Rather than a column in which I write and you read, the column evolved into something more like a conversation. The word conversation comes from Latin root, which literally means “to turn about with.” The same root gives us “conversion.” Real conversation is a genuine back and forth in which those conversing change direction together. I thank you for being conversation partners with me and for the ways you have helped me to change direction over time. I hope that even if you haven’t agreed with me, that you were given pause to think about your own beliefs.

In this idea of conversion through conversation, we see that it has not just been a conversation between writer and reader, but the Holy Spirit has been in the conversation as well. For my words alone do not have the power of conversion unless God uses my words to get one’s attention and then do something with them beyond the ability of words alone.

This is just like what happens in a sermon. Each week, more than 100 pastors prayerfully consider how to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those in the pews in Camden County. Certainly the God-given skill of the preacher comes into play. But even more important is what God does with the words as they are spoken.

I have never spoken to a pastor about preaching who has not been able to tell of a time when someone referred to something not said outright in the sermon, which proved significant to the hearer. What is heard is not identical with what is preached and thanks be to God that this is so. The rest of what happens in sermon (and the most important part) is what the Holy Spirit does in the heart of the hearer. And so it is with the readers touched by something they read from me in this space.

Now this conversation comes to an end. I begin work July 1 as Canon for Congregational Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. That mouthful of words means that I will share with our bishop in the task of tending the clergy and congregations of south Georgia. I feel called by God to this vocation. Yet every call to something is a call away from something else. In part, it is a call away from this conversation carried on through the newspaper. Someone new will take over this column, just as I took up where Bob Moon left off. The conversation continues with a new person writing alongside my conversation partner Donna Grice.

But this is not goodbye. There is no such thing as goodbye in the Kingdom of God, in the sense of a final parting. For as the faith we have is not in vain, we will see one another again, if not on earth, then in heaven. It is only farewell we say, or ta ta for now. For if the words I have written have been used by God to good effect, then we will be together again.

(The Rev. Frank Logue was the founding pastor of King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland, serving that congregation from its beginning in 2000 until this past Sunday.)

          Who would be interested in testing VirtEngine On-premise?

Hey LET,

We've been patching bugs and adding lots of amazing features this year. - Our platform is still 'late beta' and most if not all of the serious bugs have been eliminated.

We'd love to get some testing done by the community in order to find the last bugs that may affect production or user experience and also suggest new features that we may have missed to implement.

We're looking for providers whom are interested in switching their current platform in the future (or new companies looking to offer cloud services), and would like to seriously test our platform to see if it is viable alternative for them.

Our team will install all the components required, our minimum system requirements must be met (1 Hypervisor Node, and 1 Master VM)

Some of our latest features that we have added include:

  • Cloning VM's through using our backup functionality, by taking a backup and launching it.
  • Downloading backups locally, and uploading backups to the system.
  • Attaching additional networks (IP's to your VM)
  • Snapshot functionality - Snapshot is different to backups that it only stores the Operating Systems state (network configuration files, etc.)
  • Adding users manually from the admin portal.
  • Added various control panel one-click applications such as VestaCP, Webmin, ISPConfig

All of the functionality currently supported has been tested on KVM, however we have not conducted testing on Xen or LXC - if you'd like to test Xen that'll be great for us so we can make sure all the functionality works on that too.

If you're interested - feel free to reply to this thread, or contact us directly @ hello@virtengine.com

Thanks, Jonathan P

          Constraints on Cosmology and Quantum Gravity from Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory

by: Pollack, Jason Aaron (Caltech)

Abstract:
Typical cosmological states have structure, obey to very good approximation the laws of classical physics on large scales, and are far from equilibrium. Typical quantum-mechanical states have none of these properties. If the universe is described by a state in a Hilbert space, the state and its Hilbert space must therefore obey a number of constraints to describe realistic cosmological spacetimes. In particular, they must admit a quantum-to-classical transition via decoherence that allows for the emergence of classical spacetimes, and such spacetimes must obey gravitational constraints, in particular on the entanglement entropy of subsystems within them. The papers collected in this thesis are concerned with these constraints. We investigate two holographic correspondences inspired by AdS/CFT, the AdS-MERA correspondence, which suggests that anti-de~Sitter space may be given a discretized description as a tensor network, and the ER=EPR duality, which identified entangled qubits with wormholes connecting them. In the former case, we use holographic entropy bounds to severely constrain the properties of any such tensor network; in the latter case we prove a new general-relativistic area theorem which states that an area corresponding to the entanglement entropy in wormhole geometries is exactly conserved. We use information-theoretic constraints to show that under mild assumptions about the black hole interior an observer falling beyond the horizon is unable to verify the claimed cloning of information in the firewall paradox before reaching the singularity. Finally, we analyze the decoherence structures of late-time de~Sitter space and early-time slow-roll eternal inflation. We show that in the former case a universe with an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and a positive cosmological constant inevitably reaches a maximum-entropy state from which no further branching or decoherence is possible, forbidding the existence of dynamical quantum fluctuations at late time. In the latter case, gravitational-strength interaction among inflaton modes leads to decoherence of sufficiently super-Hubble modes, which we argue backreacts to cause different histories of cosmological evolution on different branches and hence creates the conditions necessary for eternal inflation.

       【 MEIZU M8】 market analysis forecast

         A few days ago, wrote an article on the news MEIZU M8】 【MEIZU M8 technology can not keep up the market to combat the typical case, today carried out in response to MEIZU M8 about analysis and forecast of MEIZU M8. First, from Baidu, the Baidu Image Search seems to delete the words "MEIZU M8" the relevant results. I do not know why, it is MEIZU request? Public relations problem?

         Well nothing to add to that nonsense, and cut into the subject, as we all know MEIZU M8 can buy now, you do not know where to buy? Click to buy MEIZU M8, or directly landing Taobao Find your favorite stores to make a purchase. MEIZU the first time mobile phone channels may be a number of local entities can not buy the case of the shop.

          2400 all-yuan price, as listed MEIZU M8 new products are the inevitable price of water so high, the first is to enhance their own "high-end" image, and the second is a small profit. For me personally I think the price should be MEIZU M8 yuan in 1600 would be reasonable, of course, 1300 will sell well.

         I guess that would be years later掉价MEIZU M8, but the rate will have a significant掉价would probably be the first time prices fell to 1999 interval. So like MEIZU M8 friend Please wait a little macro news out of time now, after all, the WINCE MEIZU whether there BUG system as well as some hardware problems we are now unclear.

         MEIZU M8 future is a very bumpy road, and immediately after the first quarter of the year, many vendors will show their new models of MEIZU M8 example is the impact, after all, the current trend of large-screen mobile phone , full-screen touch, so the majority of manufacturers introduced new models will be the case. MEIZU so in the future competitors will be more and more I have never had anything to MEIZU M8 opponent by default IPHONE, I find it this is not a level of products, regardless of who is who cloning, at least, the brand value, as well as products their own and so on, MEIZU are unmatched, I think the biggest rival to MEIZU those山寨phone. If you can from the mountain fastness of the hands of mobile phone access to a large number of users, so far as to IPHONE opponent to earn more.

         MEIZU only set aside, will fly farther, in any case, after all, domestic brands still cost-effective competition, let's not talk about MTK cheap. MEIZU overall or higher than the mountain fastness machine several levels. Of course, now the price is several levels. 2380 media quotes, at this price, I believe many of my friends prefer to buy refurbished old version iphone, now refurbished non-3G version of the IPHONE is around 2,400 yuan. And 2400 the price you can buy a lot of good phone, a little Tim HTC that money can buy a diamond. MEIZU M8 no doubt for the price is still very embarrassing.

         As for the prospect of MEIZU M8, for me personally that is not optimistic about the good, I am optimistic about the MEIZU itself for product design, as well as occupy a place for many years media player industry experience, is not optimistic about the public relations MEIZU M8, publicity, a number of factors such as price, my mother often said, are good by the by, is to let the bad side of the monks read. Indeed, a product more to see how the operators to promote. For now, for the evaluation of M8 fully than in previous years, because it is too M8 dystocia of. And now for Taobao Although selling, but in many places there is no local goods. . Moreover, many mobile phone stores. . MEIZU the counters have not yet. Is also a thorny issue.

         Concluded: M8 or should the price down. Around 1600 is a reasonable price. . There is not even pre-TV input (at least I did not see) a variety of media exposure is not a lot. I do not know what to do MEIZU team. Is busy Lunar New Year holiday?

          Peter Thiel gave $100,000 to the scientists trying to resurrect the woolly mammoth

Peter Thiel

Woolly mammoths could be coming to a park near you sometime before 2027, thanks to funding from PayPal founder and tech luminary Peter Thiel.

That's according to a new book by Ben Mezrich called "Woolly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive one of History’s Most Iconic Extinct Creatures."

As the MIT Tech Review reported, Thiel made a quiet donation of $100,000 to a de-extinction organization called "Revive & Restore" in 2015.

The project to revive woolly mammoths has been going on for several years, but it gained new attention in February when a team of Harvard scientists said they intend to resurrect the furry creature within a decade.

The woolly mammoth went extinct 10,000 years ago, and in reality, the scientists wouldn't actually be bringing it back. Instead, they aim to create a hybrid animal using genetic material from an elephant and a woolly mammoth. To do that, they'd carefully combine a selection of DNA from both creatures using gene-editing technology Crispr, put the fetus into an artificial embryo, and accio! Woolly elephant. Elephammoth. Mammophant.

Regardless of its name, the resulting animal would essentially be an elephant with mammoth features like long, shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat, and blood uniquely adapted for frigid temperatures.

mammothhuntedMammoths aren't the only animals that people want to resurrect — now-extinct or threatened species of reindeer, bison, wolves, tigers, and horses are also on the list of potential candidates. The movement to "resurrect" these creatures isn't limited to scientists, either; it's become a pet project of people across the globe, including a Russian father and son whose Kickstarter-funded "Pleistocene Park" aims to recreate a "vanished ice-age ecosystem."

Ethical debates about de-extinction projects are intense, with some scientists saying the animals could could help preserve endangered or threatened species and others saying it would destroy existing ecosystems.

Proponents say the project and others could help restore ecosystems and help fight climate change by bringing back plants like grasses and trees that suck up pollution. Other supporters say iconic resurrected animals could serve as a sort of "flagship species" which is used to encourage the public to protect the regions they represent.

But some scientists disagree. Tori Herridge, a paleobiologist at the Natural History Museum of London, is one of the scientists who examined the 28,000-year-old remains of a woolly mammoth uncovered in Siberia in 2014. She wrote in The Guardian that "cloning [a woolly mammoth] would be ethically flawed," since we still don’t fully understand the role that many of these now-extinct animals once played in the wider ecosystem.

The problem she raises, which has been pointed out by several other researchers as well, is that we don't know how these creatures' modern incarnations would affect other animals, plants, and the planet as a whole.

"It is unclear still whether the mammoth steppe disappeared as a result of the loss of the mammoth or whether the mammoth disappeared because its habitat was lost, along with its ice age world," Herridge wrote. "It’s a big gamble to put your climate-change mitigation hopes on a herd of woolly mammoths."

          Quantum computation with indefinite causal structures. (arXiv:1706.09854v1 [quant-ph])

Authors: Mateus Araújo, Philippe Allard Guérin, Ämin Baumeler

One way to study the physical plausibility of closed timelike curves (CTCs) is to examine their computational power. This has been done for Deutschian CTCs (D-CTCs) and post-selection CTCs (P-CTCs), with the result that they allow for the efficient solution of problems in PSPACE and PP, respectively. Since these are extremely powerful complexity classes, which are not expected to be solvable in reality, this can be taken as evidence that these models for CTCs are pathological. This problem is closely related to the nonlinearity of this models, which also allows for example cloning quantum states, in the case of D-CTCs, or distinguishing non-orthogonal quantum states, in the case of P-CTCs. In contrast, the process matrix formalism allows one to model indefinite causal structures in a linear way, getting rid of these effects, and raising the possibility that its computational power is rather tame. In this paper we show that process matrices correspond to a linear particular case of P-CTCs, and therefore that its computational power is upperbounded by that of PP. We show, furthermore, a family of processes that can violate causal inequalities but nevertheless can be simulated by a causally ordered quantum circuit with only a constant overhead, showing that indefinite causality is not necessarily hard to simulate.

          DIY GAINCLONE AMPLIFIER

Prelude

Bikin ampli sendiri yuk!!

  8. Siapkan bor 1mm dan bor lubang2 yang ada
  9. PCB siap digunakan.

          Tarballs – Why?

More and more I begin to wonder why we generate tarballs at all these days. Is it just because it's easy - a function of "make distcheck"? There's certainly value in the actual distcheck process to ensure you have a sane build, but why actually distribute the tarball? What's the meaningful difference between a tarball and a git tag?

Now, I won't even touch on the subject of how badly I want to throw autotools in the trash, but we're so entrenched in its ways, and are comfortable with its quirks that energy is better spent on actual improvements, so for now the distcheck process is here to stay. For now.

So I ask a very serious question, others have asked as well - why publish tarballs? Most users get their packages in binary form from their distribution. Most users who build from source I would argue are using git already, or have git installed on their system, or can easily do so. Providing instructions on cloning/checkout out the tag/building using autogen/autoreconf/etc can be provided easily and clearly.

I migrated Banshee to Linode and consequently from Apache to lighttpd about a month ago. The logs start on June 20, 2010:

    $ grep -E 'banshee-1.+\.tar\.(gz|bz2)' \
        download.banshee.fm.access.log | wc -l
    7066

So in one month, we've only had 7066 tarball downloads, and that accounts for any and all released versions of Banshee over the past 5 years. Certainly the bulk of those downloads would be version 1.6.1, since that was the newest available tarball over the last month. 284 of those downloads were version 1.7.3, released less than 24 hours ago. I could generate better statistics, but that's not the point here. The point is that number is pretty small compared to the reach of the distributions.

I roughly estimate the average size of a Banshee tarball (bzip2) is 3MB. Eliminating tarballs would save us 20GB/mo in bandwidth - and that's during a quiet time in development when the servers are less active (1.6.1 was released in May). We'll be seeing a spike I'll be monitoring around 1.7.3.

So, if we ditched tarballs, how would you be affected? Would you care?

Update: to clarify a few things, you would still build and install like normal. For instance:

$ ./autogen.sh --prefix=$HOME/local --disable-whatever \
    && make && make install

Packagers would however have an additional minor burden. If their package system (e.g. rpm) requires an archive (e.g. can't build directly from git), then the packager would be responsible for creating an archive. They could either just archive the git clone directory, or actually run their own "make distcheck" from their clone. It would be up to the packager to best integrate the git clone into whatever system they are using.

          SEO 101 The Advantages Of Article Spinning
A lot of people make a living by writing articles on the internet, and there are a lot of sites and portals where a writers’ article is published and displayed. For experienced writers, the art of article spinning is a must-have attribute.

Article spinning is the method of taking one article and creating several different unique version of it through the use of special tags. Search engines regard each version of a submitted article as a unique article, and when submitted to article directories, it is imperative to have unique articles so that they are each indexed.

The term article cloning, which is also called or referred to as article spinning, or article rewriting, is a unique way of taking an original article and changing it so that it seems like a new article. This method or process is not really a bad thing if it is done by the original author or a public domain article rewritten manually, but could become muddled if done using an article cloning program.

Currently, there are several article cloning programs available, and according to article spinning analysts, they pretty much do the same thing, which is turn a good article into a bad one. However, some programs do work properly and effectively.

So exactly just what does an article cloner or spinner do?. Most cloners or spinners have options to replace certain words with comparable words that may, or may not mean the same thing, add blocks of text at the beginning, middle and end of existing articles and move blocks of text around. Article spinners may indicate that the replacement word list for the specific software used was not as good or effective as theirs.

However, most professional spinners would note that it would not matter which version of cloning software you use, it’s how you do the writing or spinning yourself. According to experts, nearly all words have many different meanings and can mean different things in whatever context they are used. Computers just aren't smart enough to know which meaning of the word or context the author is using it in, and because of this, the articles becomes mostly muddled or lack direction.

Observers also add that after cloning the article you are left with two choices, either to submit it as it is, or go thru the article and fix everything. Neither is a good idea if you consider that by cloning, then fixing the article, you've wasted more time than if you had simply written a new article. However, with the entry of new computer programs, articles can be spun effectively, spooled, or re-written automatically using good software.

But if you create a well-written article to begin with, and then use the software correctly as a guide or reference, the software can re-write it into hundreds or even thousands of unique, high quality pieces that you would be confident enough to put your name on. And additionally, they will be more than unique enough to avoid the duplicate content filters that abound.

If a writer wants to be successful, he or she should be able to get his or her well-written article onto hundreds or even thousands of other websites. To be profitable in writing articles for the internet, one needs to create uniquely written articles for each website, and get paid good sums for it.

          Peter Thiel gave $100,000 to the scientists trying to resurrect the woolly mammoth

Peter ThielFred Prouser / Reuters

Mammophant.

Regardless of its name, the resulting animal would essentially be an elephant with mammoth features like long, shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat, and blood uniquely adapted for frigid temperatures.

mammothhuntedWikimedia CommonsMammoths aren't the only animals that people want to resurrect — now-extinct or threatened species of reindeer, bison, wolves, tigers, and horses are also on the list of potential candidates.

          Thea 2: The Shattering First Look at the Event Editor

Event Editor for the upcoming 4X Strategy/RPG hybrid Thea 2: The Shattering will allow you to weave your own custom events and stories into the game. This feature was available in the original Thea: The Awakening, and in Thea 2 it'll get a fresh coat of paint and some expanded functionality. Here's what you can expect:

The editor will have all of the usual functions, so building complex branching events with the ability to add pictures, assign groups, write stories and set challenges. You will be able to affect single player or multiplayer modes, add or remove characters and resources and even add new skills as rewards.

As previously, you will be able to choose an event type, a difficulty level and a set of prerequisites for that event to occur.

A couple of new features:

Ability to add your own features via scripting to ensure your ideas can be implemented without our fussy input.

Having a saved group (characters or items) that can be used between events, so if thieves steal your stuff, you can reclaim the actual ‘thing’ they’ve taken (in Thea 1 you had to improvise and give back something similar, especially if the event was more than one part long).

Cloning entire modules (collections of events), as well as cloning events into other modules. So you can connect some generic encounters with more complex ones, or connect stories without having to manually reproduce the mechanics.

We now also have a separate output for the surrender option, so you know, some enemies may now react differently to you giving up than when they actually beat you.

The way in which the event logic works will have some vital changes, but since those are still in the works, I won’t say too much about them. But, the layout and the principles remain the same. You have prerequisites, which can include specific race/sub-race, class, skill type, resource, gender, type of biome or terrain you’re on, number of players in game, or just pure chance. Then you have your processing, where you can create any number of combinations from those mentioned prerequisites, like choosing particular number of people, allocating a ‘must have all the groups’ or ‘must have only one of the groups’ and so much more. Then your final stage, results, where you confirm the prerequisites.

Our hope is that the editor will give our players a chance to create their own adventures and share them with friends so that exploring Thea will be even more fun.

          I don't wanna
It's weird to think, but home schoolers have summer holidays too.  Mostly because it's damn hard to continue with business as usual while the rest of the world is on holiday or, at least, pretending like they don't have jobs.  Around here we get only a couple months of summer weather and then we're back to the snow, so folks like to fit in as much sun and fun in as they can, while they can.

It's a little frantic, actually.

Already, we are swamped with invites for beaches, swimming, camping, parties, fairs, conventions... am I complaining that we are so popular and have all these things to do?  No, not really.  My actual invites from real human friends remains slim.  But social media does like to push along the many, many events happening in my town and around the province.  On Facebook, you know if you invite twenty people to your pool party, fifteen will respond with 'Interested' and three will show up.  Can you imagine if people started going to all the places they say they are attending?  Cloning technology will advance by light speed out of sheer need for multiple selves.

(I know that is not how cloning works, but I didn't want accuracy to get in the way of the point.  As every uncle everywhere has said, why let truth get in the way of a good story?)

There is a lot out there to feel like you should go to and even more to get all FOMO about.  In my neck of the woods, everybody goes camping and wants to share their favorite camp spot with friends. Mostly, cynic me believes, it's because it's about the laziest hosting experience possible (short of your own funeral) and inviting a few friends to a campground gets you off the hook socially for the rest of the year.  No need to clean your house or provide food or entertainment or gifts, just invite everyone out into the woods with their tents and some beers and your job is done.

As a family, we are generally pretty busy.  We take our hobbies seriously.  Hardly a day goes by without an activity or appointment or sports practice.  During the day, the childs I are off to something, and without any scheduled concerns, we'll go on a park crawl (like a pub crawl, but with more playgrounds and less booze), visiting or some big long hike.  Like most home schoolers, we're never home.  In fact, one of the major reasons why we chose to home school is that we couldn't figure out how to do all our out of school activities and still have time for school.  Assuming we also like to sleep.

But at the start of this summer, with roller derby lurching into off season, all the activities taking their break, our dojo limiting their summer hours... suddenly, our time to participate in summer fun like camping and fairs and beaches is wide open.  And guess what?  I don't think I want to.

I have, it feels, been neck deep in recreational activities all year long.  Facilitating the childs' activities and my own.  I'm tired of recreating.  I'm thinking I could use a little bit of buckle down and work.  A holiday from fun.

I could sum up my entire attitude to this summer to: nope, don't wanna.  I don't wanna go camping or to crowded beaches or street carnivals or even to run down the ice cream truck.  It's all sort of more-ish when I could use some less-ish.

When I was a kid (here we go), summer was a time of slowing down, not speeding up.  I remember having entire weeks of nothing planned but laying in the shade looking up at the clouds.  I am not advocating a return to my somewhat uninspired childhood (I have many sad pictures in my family photo album slurpee cups, which I apparently I had a stronger bond with than my family members or friends), but it seems that one thing that I really need a break from is recreation and entertainment.

I am already entertained.  And it's tiring.

Part of this may be coming from the fact that I am a bit injured and pain is taking away my sleep and ability to enjoy things.  But the feeling of needing to wind down and just NOT for awhile has been growing for months.

Could also be because I'm going to be turning forty two years old this summer and my what's-it-all-about-anyway-when-you-get-right-down-to-it questions are also starting stealing my sleep.  I mean, really?  What's the point?

I think I'm going to try something novel, for us home schoolers.  I'm going to stay home.

Optimistically, I'll get a few things done around the house and go easy on the pocket book.  Maybe even someone will feel sorry for my camping-improvised childs and take them away for a few days for a camping experience I don't have to be involved in.  Some studio time, making something I can  use (another quilt? Something about this thirty above weather says no), making some real progress on girl child's downstairs room that we've been building for a year or so.

Realistically, it will probably be a lot of rolling around on lawn furniture, complaining about the heat and reading books.  Or dropping the kids off at the swimming pool while I go hide in the air conditioned library.  Really, that sounds very nice too.

Anything is possible when you refuse to make plans.
          Killing and Being Killed

Dear Atul,

May I say that it is a pleasure for me as well to be chatting with a doctor (and a fine, fierce, and very brave writer as well) whom I am not interviewing and who therefore isn't suspicious of me, as all interview subjects should be suspicious of reporters; and whom I am not consulting as a patient and therefore not suspicious of myself. In truth, I don't go to doctors unless I am desperately ill, which means I am always trying to wangle necessary prescriptions for things like Synthroid from people I don't actually have to SEE. It's a holdover from my dad, who could never quite shake his Christian Science upbringing and who therefore mostly refused to go to doctors. Of course, his record was not exactly inspiring. He died 25 years ago this week of a melanoma that he watched growing on his torso for many months before he finally had it surgically removed. Too late: It had spread to his brain.

On that peppy note, I'll answer the question you thought I wouldn't. I'm working on a story about the origin of cooking and its profound impact on the evolution of human beings, a quirky little exercise for me, considering that my idea of cooking has a lot to do with poking fork-holes in microwaveable food bags.

I will also address your question about why there is so little science news on days that don't correspond to the publication dates of scientific journals. You're right. It's ridiculous. Science writers are far too beholden to the whims of the journals and their Taliban-esque embargo policies.

But we have problems trying to do end runs around journals, because if a scientist discusses data with reporters in any but the most general, wishy-washy terms, the scientist's work will not be accepted by any of the major journals. The journals give high-handed explanations for their gag rule—to improve the accuracy of science reporting!—but, as my colleague Larry Altman has pointed out, the real reason is simple greed. Journals want to make money by amassing the greatest possible advertising revenue, which requires, among other things, that they dictate the terms of how and when scientific data are released.

Speaking of the release of data, is it possible that one reason why New York's murder and crime rates are down when everybody else's are rising is that New York really was shaken to its marrow by Sept. 11? Maybe even the bad guys got good for a while. And now that I've brought bone marrow into the discussion, are you interested in hashing out the stem-cell and cloning mess at all? I really loved the letter in the New York Times this morning from Nancy Horwich, pointing out that if President Bush opposes human cloning for any reason because, as he said, "no human life should be exploited or extinguished for the benefit of another," then how can he defend capital punishment, which involves killing one person for the questionable benefit of others?

As for capital punishment, it was wonderful that for a while the nation, as exemplified by Illinois' moratorium, seemed to have soured on the whole barbaric business. But since September, ah, how sweet and righteous revenge can seem! Yup, killing and being killed are sure working their usual magic around the world.

Will you cheer me up now with happy news of that patient on the table??

Natalie

          Association of Professional Genealogists Hit By Scam - Lessons Learned
Last week the Association of Professional Genealogists announced it had been targeted by scam artists. The villains were able to impersonate the secretary's email and offered to pay APG members an hourly fee to lobby state legislatures regarding forensic genealogy.  In a further attempt, members received requests to "Support Diane's Brain Cancer Battle."  APG quickly quashed the scam by alerting members and asking them to report any such attempt at fundraising and asking that those affected to notify the organization.

I have some professional knowledge of cyber security and I have been the target of email cloning and twice had my credit card accounts hacked.  I, therefore, would like to offer a few cautions of my own.

1. Source. Be cautious of any solicitation via email or social media, especially Facebook. We have all heard about fake news on social media, yet it is hard not to click on that story about the baby with cancer.  Look carefully - is it a story supposedly about someone in a small Missouri town but the link takes you to a website that is not linked to any local, regional or state news source?  Don't be taken in just because it is a sad story or even a happy one!

2. Context.  Does the email read like a normal / regular communication you receive from an organization? Often databases are hacked by groups in foreign countries then they are sold to individual criminals or organizations.  If you closely read the fake email there will be grammatical mistakes or colloquialisms that don't fit.  For example, did a New England genealogical society end their request with "see y'all in the spring!" when you know their annual conference is in the fall and no self-respecting Bostonian would say y'all like we do in the south?  Sometimes it isn't that simple, but if you look you will often see things that just do not fit the norm.

3. Legitimacy. If any legitimate organization is soliciting funding, take a minute to think about the source and what they are asking.  Would an organization such as APG solicit funding through their work emails for an individual?  The answer is never.  Most companies and non-profit organizations have rules about using their official communication sources for private funding.

4. Check it out. At the national level any non-profit must register and are held accountable by federal law.  You can check out charity ratings at Charity Watch. For an organization such as a genealogical society, go to their website for information about events and solicitations.  If an organization is undertaking a fundraising campaign, you bet it will be front and center on their website.  Also, you can contact them via phone or mail, but use only phone numbers that you find officially linked to the organization not one provided in the suspect email.

5. Be familiar with the typical scam.  You can check  this US government website that lists common fraud types: https://www.usa.gov/stop-scams-frauds#item-35157.

According to an IBM report, the global cost of cybercrime will reach $2 trillion by 2019, a threefold increase from the 2015 estimate of $500 billion. Small, regional and even local organizations are not immune. The IBM report explains, "a staggering 50 percent of small and mid-sized organizations reported suffering at least one cyberattack in the last 12 months."

Your best bet is to be aware, be vigilant of your own finances and social media presence and most importantly when and if you are ready to give to a worthy cause, take the time to do the research and get your hard-earned dollars in needy hands, not those of criminal organizations.

          Comment on A closer look at AMD's new Ryzen Pro chips by Greg Zeng
Industry watcher like myself have always wondered with the AMD versus INTEL methods of innovation. AMD seems to have complex mergers of strange companies & talents. More intellectual cross-breeding. Intel seems more NIT, NIMBY & closed to insiders only, but with more pure research gambling, which seems to have worked. AMD's multi-culturalism approach has the usual problems of internal misunderstandings, poor optimizations in management, etc. Darwinian evolution seems t show that sexual disharmony is however better in the long run for survival, than non-sexual cloning, with little genetic diversity from outsiders. This type of analysis & discussion is of great interest, controversy, etc to all in senior management. Will Darwinian evolution proved true again? Will AMD's mammals replace Intel's dinosaurs for Earth dominance?

Mammophant.

Regardless of its name, the resulting animal would essentially be an elephant with mammoth features like long, shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat, and blood uniquely adapted for frigid temperatures.

mammothhuntedWikimedia CommonsMammoths aren't the only animals that people want to resurrect — now-extinct or threatened species of reindeer, bison, wolves, tigers, and horses are also on the list of potential candidates.

Audulus 3.4 Update Adds Support for Multichannel Audio/CV Output

Audulus LLC is proud to announce the release of Audulus version 3.4 - a free update for all Audulus platforms* allowing users to access up to 16 audio and control voltage (CV) inputs and outputs through two brand-new nodes called ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

Previously, Audulus users were limited to two inputs and two outputs using the Mic and Speaker nodes. Now, with the ADC and DAC nodes, Audulus users can take full advantage of their DC-coupled** audio interfaces, such as the Expert Sleepers ES-8 and the Universal Audio Apollo.

This means that users can now integrate Audulus seamlessly with hardware synthesizers and analog effects pedals using their computer or iOS device.

Some examples uses include:
Sending and receiving simultaneous audio, modulation, and envelope CVs to up to 4 Eurorack filters for true analog filter polyphony
Clocking multiple Korg Volcas at different speeds or divisions of a master clock
Sequencing analog synthesizers with volt-per-octave (VPO) signals
Receiving multiple DC signals from hardware controllers like CV joysticks and ribbon controllers for ultra-high-resolution control over your digital synthesizers
Receiving, quantizing, and sending out analog VPO signals
Generating LFOs and envelopes of any imaginable shape
Using stompboxes on a send & return within your Audulus patches
Cloning, adapting, and modifying true work-alikes of digital and analog Eurorack modules
Generating quadraphonic or surround-sound-style effects for keyboards and guitar
Receiving an analog master clock and generating divisions, probability triggers, or Euclidean-style rhythm sequencing (or mix of all!)
Storing, recalling, and rapidly switching between different modular synth patch routings
Analyzing a guitar’s pitch and volume envelope within Audulus and converting them to an analog VPO and envelope signal
Using Audulus as a multi-effect rack with 4 mono inputs and outputs or 2 stereo inputs and outputs (with an Expert Sleepers ES-8)

These are just a few of the possibilities Audulus users have explored so far. To keep up with patches and modules using the new ADC and DAC nodes, sign up for the Audulus user forum and download and share your patches there - http://forum.audulus.com

Users can also follow Audulus on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Soundcloud, and Facebook @audulus for tutorials, video clips, and sound samples of what the ADC and DAC nodes can do.

If Audulus users have any questions about how to implement the ADC and DAC nodes, they can contact Audulus at support@audulus.com

Happy patching from all of us at Audulus!

* Audulus iOS requires the Apple Camera Connector Kit to connect to the Expert Sleepers ES-8.

**Most normal audio interfaces are AC-coupled. AC-coupling prevents a constant DC offset from damaging speakers and headphones. DC-coupled audio interfaces like the Expert Sleepers ES-8 are not required to use all 16 inputs and outputs of an audio interface or aggregate device. DC-coupled audio interfaces are required to send and receive accurate DC-offset analog signals such as gates, VPO signals, and envelopes.
          Presets and adding new fixtures

Gabe,

Patch the 11 additional fixtures first. Then, using the clone command, clone your original fixture to the new fixtures. There will be options to clone presets only, cues only, groups only, or all. I would recommend backing up / saving your show first. That way if something goes wrong you can restore / reload it.

Here are some links to help describe it.

Good luck and remember, the fixtures must be patched before they can be cloned.
