Harley-Davidson Releases New Motorcycle Designed For Men

MILWAUKEE—Calling it a huge opportunity to tap into a market that has traditionally been neglected by motorcycle manufacturers, Harley-Davidson announced Thursday a new line of motorcycles designed specifically for men. “Everything about our original line of motorcycles, including our elegant filigree logo, was created with women in mind, but it’s 2017, and there’s no reason not to have a bike for the guys as well,” said CEO Matthew Levatich, adding that while men often admire the performance of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, they generally can’t imagine actually owning something so frilly and feminine themselves. “We were hesitant because the name ‘Harley-Davidson’ is so synonymous with women that any rebrand seemed impossible, but when men get a look at this Harley—in black or silver, not hot pink—they’re going to want to get their hands on one, the same way the ladies have since we were ...

          Lykins Helps Build Fairgrounds Pavilion

MILFORD, Ohio -- Lykins Energy Solutions has donated most of the funds to build a new Clermont County Fairgrounds building. The Lykins Family Pavilion is a new entertainment pavilion at the fairgrounds.

The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new building on July 30.

The previous entertainment pavilion was in the middle of the midway and required using a tent that was expensive and made the area very hot due to a lack of circulation. The original pavilion, due to its popularity and location, also made the midway congested and hard to move in, according to fair board member Jerry Bridges.

The new Lykins Family Pavilion is located on the far end of the State Route 132 side of the fairgrounds.

“Going to the county fair with our parents is one of my earliest childhood memories,” said Jeff Lykins, president and CEO of Lykins Energy Solutions. “We’ve always felt we should give back to the community that supports our business by buying our products and services. This is a great way for our family and our company to give back to our community and its residents.”

Bridges said the new pavilion will bring additional, much needed revenue to the fairgrounds. With the new facility, the fairgrounds will be able to host weekly concerts.

Lykins Energy Solutions (formerly Lykins Oil) is a family-owned and -operated business based in Milford, Ohio. The company was founded in 1948 by Guy Lykins Sr., and is now in the third generation of management. The company serves customers in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, as well as throughout the Midwest and the Southeast and provides products and services including branded fuels, wholesale fuels, commercial, transportation and home heating oil, propane, lubricants, fleet fueling, electricity and natural gas for Ohio. The company represents four major brands of fuel that it sells to independent gasoline dealers: BP, Marathon, Shell and Gulf.

Servant Leadership Trumps Politics as Usual

SEATTLE – Although the outspoken chairman and CEO of coffee giant Starbucks has dabbled in big issues before—his well-intentioned but quickly abandoned “Race Together” initiative had baristas writing racial harmony messages on cups—Howard Schultz is not running for president.

“Despite the encouragement of others, I have no intention of entering the presidential fray,” the chairman and CEO of coffee giant Starbucks said in an op-ed in The New York Times. “I’m not done serving at Starbucks. Although we have built an iconic brand while providing even part-time employees with access to health care, free college education and stock options, there is more we can do as a public company to demonstrate responsible leadership.”

But the fact that Schultz is not running … yet … doesn’t mean he has no opinion on what’s wrong with Washington and how a great leader should operate.

“We cannot afford more false promises, slogans, theatrics and fool’s gold,” he wrote. “Our nation has been profoundly damaged by a lack of civility and courage in Washington, where leaders of both parties have abdicated their responsibility to forge reasonable compromises to expand the economy, rebuild our infrastructure, improve schools, transform entitlement programs and so much more. We have become too desensitized to the horrendous metrics that define today’s America, from student-loan debt to food-stamp dependency to the size of our prison population.”

He continued, “The values of servant leadership—putting others first and leading from the heart—need to emerge from every corner of American life, including the business community.

“While Americans have diverse views in what they want from Washington, I reject the notion that our divided and dysfunctional government is merely a reflection of what the political class calls the red-blue divide. Too many of our political leaders are putting party before country, power before principle and cynicism before civility. The common purpose that created this great nation, which has united us in difficult moments, has gone missing.

“Our country is in desperate need of servant leaders, of men and women willing to kneel and embrace those who are not like them. Everyone seeking the presidency professes great love for our nation. But I ask myself, how can you be a genuine public servant if you belittle your fellow citizens and freeze out people who hold differing views?”

He concluded with a provocative challenge: “Our country deserves a candidate courageous enough to select a member of the other party as a running mate. Our country deserves a president humble enough to see leadership not as an entitlement but as a privilege."

          Speedway Reaches Hess Halfway Mark

UPDATE: According to data provided by GasBuddy, the current Speedway count is 2,156, while the current Hess count is 645 (see map below for the conversion progress).

FINDLAY, Ohio --Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) has now converted more than half of the 1,250 Hess gas stations and convenience stores it acquired in October 2014 to its Speedway brand, Gary Heminger, president and CEO, said in reporting MPC’s second-quarter 2015 financial results.

It has converted more than 650 of the retail sites to the Speedway brand since the acquisition, said Heminger on the company’s earnings call.

According to data provided by GasBuddy, the current Speedway count is 2,156, while the current Hess count is 645 (see map below for the conversion progress).

Speedway, MPC's retail segment, performed well and continues to make tremendous progress integrating the East Coast and Southeast retail locations, he said.

"We are on pace to achieve the expected synergies for 2015 from light-product supply, as well as from operating and administrative expense savings. Further, the accelerated progress for store conversions and subsequent remodels has allowed us to more rapidly implement Speedway's industry-leading Speedy Rewards loyalty program. This program and other marketing enhancements are expected to drive the anticipated synergies to the business over the next several years."

Tony Kenney, president of Speedway, said. “We're moving along at an accelerated pace in converting the [Hess] brand to Speedway. … The important thing there is it's more than just the brand. What's going inside the store is all of our technology that is the platform for our marketing programs, primarily our loyalty program, all of our inventory management, other things that drive savings and synergies for us as we operate convenience stores. … As we begin to bring on all of the marketing enhancements through the conversions inside the store, then we'll start to realize those benefits down the road.”

Speedway segment income from operations was $127 million in second-quarter 2015, compared with $94 million in second-quarter 2014. This increase was primarily the result of higher merchandise and light-product margins and the addition of the newly acquired locations, partially offset by higher operating and administrative expenses. Speedway's consolidated light-product margin increased to 13.51 cents per gallon in second-quarter 2015, from 12.82 cents per gallon in second-quarter 2014.

Speedway's income from operations was $33 million higher in the quarter as compared to second-quarter 2014. Speedway's newly acquired locations contributed income of approximately $14 million to the quarter's results or approximately $45 million of EBITDA.

For the legacy Speedway sites, the merchandise gross margin was $23 million higher in second-quarter 2015 compared to the same quarter last year, and the light-product gross margin was about $16 million higher.

Speedway same-store gasoline sales volume was down two-tenths of a percent versus same quarter last year compared to estimates of U.S. demand growth in the second quarter of approximately 3% higher. Overall, gasoline sales volumes for legacy Speedway locations were up 3% in the quarter, reflecting the impact of investments in new, rebuild and remodel locations.

“Another key performance metric for our retail group is same-store merchandise sales,” said Timothy Griffith, CFO, “and we're continuing to see strong demand for our in-store offering as our same-store merchandise sales in the quarter excluding cigarettes were up 4.6% versus same quarter last year. So far in July, we've seen a 1.6% increase in same-store gasoline volumes compared to last July.”

MPC is the nation's fourth-largest refiner. Approximately 5,460 independently owned gas stations across 19 states sell the Marathon-brand. In addition, Speedway owns and operates the nation's second-largest convenience-store chain, with approximately 2,750 convenience stores in 22 states. MPC also owns, leases or has ownership interests in approximately 8,300 miles of pipeline. Through subsidiaries, MPC owns the general partner of MPLX LP, a midstream master limited partnership (MLP). MPC's fully integrated system provides operational flexibility to move crude oil, feedstocks and petroleum-related products efficiently through the company's distribution network in the Midwest, Southeast and Gulf Coast regions.

QuickChek, Muscle Milk Partner to Help Military Families

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. -- QuickChek convenience stores and Muscle Milk have teamed up to raise funds to help post-9/11 service members and their families through an in-store promotion and sale of specialty Muscle Milk bottles.

QuickChek is the only nonmilitary retail outlet that is selling Muscle Milk “Hope for the Warriors” chocolate 14-oz. bottles in its 140 stores while supplies last. Muscle Milk will donate $1.20 to the Hope for the Warriors for every case of the specialty protein nutrition bottles sold. Individual bottles will retail for $3.69 each or two for $6.00.

The Muscle Milk campaign follows a recent in-store QuickChek promotion in which it invited customers to purchase paper dog-tags for $1 at any of the company’s locations throughout New Jersey, New York’s Hudson Valley and Long Island. The promotion ran from June 6 through July 18, 2015, to support Hope for the Warriors, which is dedicated to restoring hope for service members and military families.

QuickChek also held a charity golf outing in June to raise additional funds for Hope for the Warriors.

          iPhone turns 10

A man uses his iPhone during a preview event at the new Apple Store Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, US.

Apple Inc.’s iPhone turned 10 yesterday, evoking memories of a rocky start for the device that ended up doing most to start the smartphone revolution and stirring interest in where  it will go from here. Apple has sold more than one billion iPhones since June 29, 2007, but the first iPhone, which launched without an App Store and was restricted to the Inc network, was limited compared to today’s version. After sluggish initial sales, Apple slashed the price to spur holiday sales that year. “The business model for year one of the iPhone was a disaster,” Tony Fadell, one of the Apple developers of the device, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. “We pivoted and figured it out in year two.” The very concept of the iPhone came as a surprise to some of Apple’s suppliers a decade ago, even though Apple, led by CEO Steve Jobs, had already expanded beyond computers with the iPod. “We still have the voicemail from Steve Jobs when he called the CEO and founder here,” said David Bairstow at Skyhook, the company that supplied location technology to early iPhones. “He thought he was being pranked by someone in the office and it took him two days to call Steve Jobs back.” The iPhone...
Spectra7, providing chips for high-speed connectivity, raises $4.6m
Spectra7 Microsystems of San Jose, California, a developer of high performance analogue semiconductors, announced that it has closed its previously announced bought deal offering of 11,500,000 units at a price of 40c per unit, including the full exercise of the over-allotment option, for aggregate gross proceeds of $4.6 million.

Spectra7 stated that the public offering was underwritten by a syndicate of underwriters led by Canaccord Genuiy and including Eight Capital and Echelon Wealth Partners.

In addition to the public offering, the company announced that it has closed the first tranche of its private placement of units, as previously announced on June 7th, pursuant to which it issued 3,280,750 units for additional gross proceeds of $1.31 million, including subscriptions by its CEO and certain directors of the company.

Each unit issued through the offerings comprises one common share and one-half of a common share purchase warrant, with each warrant entitling the holder to acquire one common share for 55c per share for a period of two years after closing of the offerings.

Spectra7 stated that the net proceeds from the offerings will be used to fund R&D and for working capital and general corporate purposes.

Separately, the company announced amendments to its $6.50 million senior secured term loan facility with MidCap Financial. The amendments include extending the commencement date for principal payments under the loan facility by a year to June 1, 2018, and the option to extend the maturity date of the facility by a further year upon satisfaction of certain conditions.

In relation to the amendments, Spectra7 has issued warrants to purchase up to 750,000 common shares, with each warrant exercisable for a period of five years into one common share at a price of 39c.

For its most recent quarter ended March 31, 2017, Spectra7 reported revenue of $2.7 million, up 8% versus $2.5 million a year earlier, with gross margin as a percentage of revenue for the quarter at 60%, flat sequentially.

* In January, Spectra7 demonstrated what it claimed as the first QSFP28 Double Density (QSFP28-DD) active copper cable (ACC) integrating its new GaugeChanger Plus GC2502 silicon. It also stated it would begin sampling GaugeChanger Plus QSFP28-DD active copper modules to data centre cable assembly companies during the quarter.

Using the linear design of its GC2502, Spectra7 noted that the modules can support both NRZ and PAM4 signalling, enabling 200 or 400 Gigabit Ethernet transmissions over the same cable.

* Spectra7 also announced sampling of IEEE COM-compliant SFP28 and QSFP28 active copper modules to Tier 1 cable assembly and data centre customers in North America and Asia. It noted the modules were available for evaluation and qualification by customers such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Baidu and Alibaba, as well as data centre equipment manufacturers such as Cisco, HP, Dell and Hauwei.

* Spectra7 is an analogue semiconductor company delivering solutions enabling high bandwidth, speed and resolution for electronics manufacturers addressing broadband connectivity markets. Based in San Jose, the company has design centres in Markham, Ontario, Cork, Ireland and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Claro Brazil partners with Huawei to launch 4.5G
Huawei announced that Claro Brazil recently launched what is claimed to be the first commercial 4.5G network in Brazil, incorporating 4 x 4 MIMO, carrier aggregation (CA) and 256QAM technology, in the city of Brasilia.

Claro demonstrated 4.5G data rates averaging 250 Mbit/s on compatible smartphones during the release ceremony in Brasilia, which is claimed to be around ten times the average rate delivered on the existing 4G network. Claro also announced its new tariff policy at the event, which features increased data allowances for existing packages.

Huawei noted that as smartphones featuring support for both 4 x 4 MIMO and 256QAM become available in the market, users will be able to access the enhanced capabilities offered by the 4.5G network. On the network side, Claro is able to provide mobile Internet access with fibre-like speeds to mobile customers with suitable devices.

Huawei noted that 4.5G Evolution helps operators enhance their networks by introducing 5G technologies into existing 4G networks. This can allow operators to trial 5G-like services and develop the business models that 5G will support in the future.

Separately, Huawei announced that working with French operator SFR it had completed the first pre-commercial field verification of 4 x 4 MIMO technology in France, enabling a downlink throughput of 628.3 Mbit/s using a commercially available phone on SFR's 4.5G network.

The tests with SFR involved a commercial phone operating on the live SFR 4.5G network and served to verify that the use of 4 x 4 MIMO, combined with 2 CC carrier aggregation and 256QAM modulation, can enable throughput of up to 628.3 Mbit/s. Huawei noted that SFR is aiming to extend its 4.5G network coverage to 90% of customers in France by the end of the year, and to increase this to 99% during 2018.

Commenting on the network launch, Claro CEO Paulo César Teixeira said, "The commercial release of the 4.5G network, with 4 x 4 MIMO, carrier aggregation, 700 MHz spectrum activation and advanced modulation, will help the Brazilian communications industry to play a significant role in the worldwide arena, as the country is a pioneer in this technology… Claro will use the recently acquired 700 MHz frequency band as a part of its ongoing effort to build a quality, next-gen mobile network nationwide".

Operator of Illegal Bitcoin Exchange Coin.mx Sentenced to Prison
coinmx.jpg

Anthony Murgio, 33, of Tampa, Florida, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for running a Bitcoin exchange connected to hackers. The exchange was used to launder more than $10 million worth of funds, authorities reported.

Both Murgio and Yuri Lebedev, 39, of St. John’s, Florida, operated Coin.mx through a fraudulent company called “Collectables Club.” According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the illegal Bitcoin exchange used the firm’s misleading name to open financial accounts at banks pretending to be a “members-only association of individuals who discussed, bought, and sold collectible items and memorabilia.” Murgio and Lebedev, along with other co-conspirators, violated bank and credit card company rules and regulations by “deliberately misidentifying and miscoding Coin.mx customers’ credit and debit card transactions.”

“Lies conceived and deployed by Murgio permeated every aspect of Coin.mx’s operation, including its use of front companies, like Collectables Club and Currency Enthusiasts, to try to conceal the illicit nature of the operation,” the Department of Justice stated in its sentencing submission.

On January 9, Murgio pled guilty to three counts regarding operating Coin.mx, which processed over $10 million worth of illegal Bitcoin transactions. Murgio ran the Bitcoin exchange between October 2013 and July 2015 for Gery Shalon, 33, an Israeli citizen who was responsible for hacking at least nine companies, including JPMorgan Chase, E-Trade Financial Corporation and Dow Jones. Coin.mx sold bitcoins that came from illegal online transactions, such as victim payments to ransomware attackers who sought to launder the cryptocurrencies clean.

“I screwed up badly and made serious mistakes and misjudgments,” Murgio said, showing remorse, to U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan at his sentencing.

Shalon, along with Ziv Orenstein, 42, compromised data on approximately 76 million household customers and 7 million businesses by hacking the nine companies. U.S. officials described their operation as a “diversified criminal conglomerate” responsible for the largest theft of valuable information from a U.S. bank. The compromised data included the names of customers, along with email addresses and phone numbers. Authorities collected evidence stating that Murgio exchanged cash for the bitcoins of Shalon’s criminal gang. Israeli police arrested Shalon and Orenstein in July 2015, and they were extradited to the United States in June 2016. Both are facing serious charges, including aggravated identity theft, wire fraud and money laundering.

“Mr. Murgio led an effort based on ambition and greed,” and constructed on a “pyramid of lies,” Judge Nathan said during the sentencing hearing at the Manhattan federal court.

On March 17, a Manhattan jury found Lebedev and his co-conspirator Trevon Gross, 52, of New Jersey, guilty of charges connected to a bribery scheme in an attempt to hide the illegal activities of Coin.mx from financial institutes and regulators. Both of the defendants are facing a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Judge Nathan scheduled the sentencing hearing of Lebedev and Gross for July 20, 2017.

Murgio’s father, Michael Murgio, 66, was also involved in the Coin.mx case. In October, the father plead guilty to “making a false statement to the National Credit Union Administration on behalf of his son.” By making a plea deal, Michael Murgio managed to avoid additional charges in the case, including “conspiracy to make corrupt payments with intent to influence an officer of a financial institution and making corrupt payments.” Judge Nathan sentenced the elder Murgio to one year of probation along with a $12,000 fine.

The FBI arrested both Lebedev and Murgio on July 23, 2015, for “running an unlicensed bitcoin exchange with the goal of helping individuals launder money.”

Despite the prosecution’s request for 10 to 12 years and seven months behind bars, the Manhattan federal court sentenced Murgio to five and a half years in prison. According to Reuters, Judge Nathan considered Murgio’s “generosity to friends and support to his family” and imposed a prison sentence half as long as the prosecutor recommended.

Judge Nathan has scheduled a hearing on September 1 to decide on the amount of fines, forfeiture and restitution Murgio has to pay to the state. The operator of the illegal Bitcoin exchange remains free on bail.

Ask engineers what they do and they’ll likely tell you they solve problems. That’s true whether they’re trying to shrink the size of a smartphone or turn around a struggling Fortune 500 company. They’ll also tell you there’s never just one “right” way to solve any particular problem. But no matter the challenge, the goal is always the same: come up with solutions that work — efficiently, reliably and with a manageable margin of error.           lagos: day two + three

On my second Lagos day I saw more of the city walls, more of the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, and also visited the Mercado dos Escravos. The Mercado dos Escravos - or Slave Market Museum - used to be the first slave market in Europe. It was quite cool, fascinating and fairly informative, I did like the style of exhibition and incorporation of new technology, and would recommend going if you're in Lagos. Yet, to me it felt as if it was less condemning of the past and instead a bit exploitative. Then again, I don't know what would be the best way of exhibitioning slavery, I've only barely scratched the surface of the subject of slavery in my studies of history, and platitudes of saying slavery was awful aren't really that helpful.

Just like I merely touched upon the subject now, after my visit to the museum I obviously went to the beaches again. Most of the beach photos here are from Praia do Camilo that I only visited on my second day. It's a bit further away, but it's my favourite. I think it's become clear that I'm a fan of a good beach. (I mean, aren't most people?) On my third day, I woke up early to go for a swim and sadly had to head back to Faro quite soon afterwards, from where I even more sadly headed back up north.

That's the last of my Algarve posts - and I already miss it. Doesn't it sound and look pretty decent, though? And if you've not seen it yet, you can find my firt post on Lagos here.
          through the years: march
Time for another look into my past outfits of the 2010s:

2012:  I didn't have any posts, never mind outfit posts, from 2011, so here's two from the year after it. I really like the first picture and still wear this vintage dress - although not as often as I should! On the other hand, I only own the cardigan anymore from the second outfit. The cardi was made by my grandma so I don't think I'll ever throw it away. I used to wear lace tops like this all the time, and only recently sold/donated them (surprised I'm wearing an another top underneath, haha!). I kind of want to introduce a denim skirt back into my wardrobe and the shoes (that are part of both outfits) were a favourite that I would not mind owning again. I like March 2012 Laura!

2013: Outfits, cemeteries and Doctor Who references - has anything changed from this? Not noticeably, I think. Still wear my vintage leather jacket all the time, still wear the headband when it's cold, and still wear the wellies when it rains. Even though I don't have the bag and the heart-print skirt anymore, I find them cute. I don't even hate the white tights with this outfit! (Don't think I'd buy white tights again, though.)

2014: I love this outfit. So much so, that my sidebar picture is still from 2014.. I was really sad when I didn't fit into these shorts anymore and I was really sad when these shoes got holes in them. I do usually love and wear my clothes until there's nothing left of them, to be honest. I don't wear the top as much as I used to but my grandma's scarf is my go-to scarf and brings colour to a lot of my current outfits, and, again, this cardi made by my grandma is the prettiest and warmest thing in the world. I also really like my eyeliner and hair here. It's almost making me want to go short again, but am trying to stay determined to grow my hair.

2015: This is cute as well - all my March outfits I've chosen are quite cute. I don't think I've worn the braces since 2015, but they may make a comeback at some point. You never know. This top was one of my favourite crop tops and these were probably my all-time favourite jeans. (The hair I had for most of 2015 reminds me of how tedious it is to grow out a pixie and makes it easier to remember that it's not a good idea to go for the chop right now.)

2016: This one doesn't feel like it was a year ago. Time flies - whether or not you're having fun. I still like the colour combination and would possibly wear it again. I'm going on and on about my hair which isn't very interesting, but look at it! It's almost doubled in length since this was taken.

2017: Technically, this one's from February, but I posted it only a couple of days back so we shall count it as a March outfit! Do go and check out my previous post with lots of pictures of my new uni!

I feel like March has possibly been one of my best months for outftits so far. I only have autumn and winter months of these left to do, but I'll be back with these posts in September! These are always so much fun for me and it's also always lovely to hear you lot like these:-) Do you have a favourite or least favourite March Laura outfit?

And if you haven't yet, you can read my other "through the years" posts here: AprilMayJuneJuly & AugustJanuaryFebruary |

"Hacker" Tak Selalu Jahat, Contohnya Pemuda 13 Tahun Asal Pakistan Ini

Belajar sendiri

Kedua orang tua Tahir tidak memiliki latar belakang teknologi. Tahir pun awalnya tak tahu menahu soal peretasan komputer.

Rentangnya bisa antara 50 dollar AS hingga 350.000 dollar AS.

Ingin bantu mengamankan internet

"Keren sekali, hebat," komentar Cook setelah menyaksikan Yuma mendemokan aplikasinya.

Surveys show employees' money angst hurts productivity

By Mark Huffman of ConsumerAffairs
June 29, 2017

PhotoAfter several high-profile and well-paid professional athletes retired from their sport in near-bankruptcy, leagues began providing rookies with some financial coaching in addition to athletic coaching.

It's made a difference, as more players now have diversified portfolios to fall back on when their playing days are over.

When you boil it down, it's an example of a financial wellness program -- learning good habits to build wealth and avoiding financial mistakes. These days, businesses are adopting a similar approach, with financial wellness programs becoming a popular employee benefit.

SunTrust has just rolled out a financial wellness program and reports Home Depot, Delta Airlines, Equifax, McKee Foods, Waffle House, Haverty's, and 1-800 Contacts are among the early adopters.

Financial fitness programs

"More than 40% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and 75% report experiencing financial stress," said Bill Rogers, CEO of SunTrust. "Progressive companies can improve overall wellness in America by offering a financial fitness program for their employees."

Participating employees take part in workshops and online sessions to learn how to establish financial goals. The program stresses the importance of having an emergency savings fund and managing spending habits.

SunTrust says a follow-up survey found employees who had a household budget rose from 43% before the start of the program to 87% when it was completed. By the time the program ended, nearly all participants had set up an emergency funds and increased their contributions to retirement savings accounts by 35 percent.

No sales pitches

SunTrust stresses that its program is non-profit and there are no advertisements or sales pitches for financial products anywhere in the curriculum.

"We've had terrific feedback from our associates about this program," said Scott Smith, vice president of Human Resources at Home Depot. "It's a great way for us to put more power behind the great financial benefits we already offer."

You're likely to hear more about these programs in the months ahead, and maybe even have access to one at your place of employment.

PWC's 2017 Employee Financial Wellness Survey found that employees' financial stress takes a toll on company productivity. Nearly a third of employees said they are distracted by personal financial issues while at work. Nearly half admit to spending three hours or more each week dealing with personal finances at work.

What's behind this growing financial stress? Not surprisingly, for many it is student loan debt.

Forty percent of Millennials and 31% of Gen X employees with student loans reported these debts are having a significant impact on their ability to set and meet other financial goals.

Companies interested in adding a financial wellness program can learn more by reading this report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Media Matters responds to the latest setback for 21st Century Fox’s bid to take over Sky

Media Matters for America President Angelo Carusone released the following statement after U.K. Culture Secretary Karen Bradley announced that she was “minded” to refer 21st Century Fox’s bid to take over Sky PLC to the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority on grounds of media plurality:

The government should not approve 21st Century Fox’s bid to take over Sky. It’s alarming that the company’s demonstrated culture of malfeasance and governance deficiencies borne out of Executive Chairman Rupert Murdoch’s commitment to advancing his personal political agenda has not already been sufficient to warrant outright rejection.

The soft touch to which the government is treating Murdoch’s bid is also revealing -- it seems to come in part because of the disproportionate amount of political power and influence that Murdoch wields. As Secretary Bradley accurately notes, this takeover will give Murdoch even more power and influence. That kind of disproportionate control, especially in the hands of an already destructive entity, is not in anyone’s interest except Murdoch’s.

Beware Murdoch’s promises and assurances. As we have noted, he has made an awful lot of them in the past in order to a secure a deal, only to swiftly disregard his word once the deal was finalized.

In mid-June, Media Matters for America President Angelo Carusone sent a letter to the U.K.'s chief broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, highlighting a number of recent developments -- all of which concern Fox News -- that are pertinent to Ofcom’s investigation into the potential takeover of Sky PLC by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, Fox News’ parent company.

The recent developments detailed in Media Matters' letter to Ofcom further underscore that Murdoch and his sons fail to satisfy the conditions necessary to acquire British satellite broadcasting company Sky in full and expose dangers that the bid for Sky would pose to the British public and media landscape.

The letter from Carusone follows a March 30 report Media Matters submitted in partnership with global activism group Avaaz to Ofcom that detailed the risks Murdoch’s desired takeover of Sky poses to British broadcasting standards.

Before that, Media Matters and Avaaz submitted a report to Secretary Bradley of the U.K. Department for Culture, Media and Sport that demonstrated that the risk of Foxification is too great to simply rubber-stamp a Murdoch takeover. On March 16, Bradley referred Murdoch's takeover bid to Ofcom for a thorough investigation on the grounds of "media plurality and commitment to broadcasting standards." The findings of the Ofcom investigation are due by June 20.

21st Century Fox already owns 39.1 percent of Sky. Murdoch abandoned a previous bid for full ownership in light of an investigation into mass hacking at his U.K.-based newspapers. Following an investigation, a parliamentary report found that Murdoch was “not a fit person” to run a major corporation and that his son James (who at the time ran the parent company of News Of The World and The Sun; he is now the CEO of 21st Century Fox) showed “wilful ignorance” of the industrial-scale hacking. In September of 2016, it was reported that Fox News had engaged in similar tactics, hacking the phone of Media Matters reporter Joe Strupp.

Manufacturing Journalist TR Cutler Profiles Commence CRM Leader

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/31/2007 -- Commence offers lean industrial companies complete "Freedom Of Choice" to select the solutions and platform that best meets the business requirements of manufacturers and distributors. The comprehensive CRM Industrial application suite is available for use on premise or on-demand as a hosted service. Industrial leaders often build departmental lean CRM solutions with the award winning Commence Lean Industrial CRM Framework. These choices are why so many industrial companies choose Commence as the solution for managing customer relationships. All Commence Industrial solutions support mobile or wireless connectivity and integration to back-office accounting and ERP systems.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems allow businesses to capture, track, and manage vital customer information. The explosive growth of CRM technology has attracted numerous companies, however the industry has been plagued by vendors offering overly complex solutions to solve basic business problems. "This has resulted in a low adoption rate and failed customer expectations" says Larry Caretsky, CEO of Commence Corporation. "The concern of most businesses today is not the lack of technology, but rather how they can leverage technology to improve their internal processes and ultimately their bottom line."

For the past ten years the role of maximizing lifetime value of customers has dramatically changed with the implementation and utilization of CRM. Generic CRM solutions have failed, and core issues of leveraging technology to improve internal processes and ultimately the bottom line, are still at the forefront of the CRM efficacy discussion. Larry Caretsky, CEO of Commence Corporation, a leading CRM provider, is the software executive profiled in The Software Professional Journal by manufacturing Journalist TR Cutler. The entire feature can be read at http://www.softwareprofessionalpeople.com/article1.htm.

Caretsky's company has been providing software solutions to growing businesses for seventeen years and has witnessed all the trends in CRM. With this vast experience, Caretsky discovered long ago that rapidly deployable, cost effective solutions were the only way for customers to quickly and affordably reap the benefits of their investment.

Few CRM firms have taken the unique approach to meeting the key objectives businesses by streamlining internal business processes, improving sales processes, and delighting customers. Caretsky refers to this proven implementation methodology as S.T.E.P., the System Technology Execution Process. S.T.E.P begins with the fundamental knowledge that most customers must first deal with the problem of data capture, data consolidation and data management. Typically, vital customer data is spread throughout the organization in contact managers, back office systems and spreadsheets. Employees spend a significant amount of time trying to determine where or who in the organization has the information they need to address customer inquiries. The inability to gain access to a complete customer profile only serves to rob people of precious time that should be spent selling to or servicing customers. Management is clearly aware of this and they realize that in order to become a more efficient sales and service organization they must get the right information in the hands of the right people at the right time.

"Many companies are entering the CRM market with generic solutions designed under a one-size fits all approach," says Caretsky. "Their business model is to try and sell the same solution to as many companies as possible regardless of the industry their in. This may have worked ten years ago, but it won't today. You simply cannot expect to sell your solution to a bank then walk across the street and sell it to an insurance company. You have to respect the complexity of their businesses and be prepared to understand and address their unique business requirements."

Commence has taken a unique approach to meeting these objectives beginning with the fundamental knowledge that most small to mid-size manufacturers and distributors must first address the problem of data capture, data consolidation and data sharing. The issue they face is that vital customer information is spread throughout their organization in contact managers, back office systems and excel spreadsheets and is often difficult to attain. Employees spend a significant amount of time trying to determine where or who in the organization has the information they need to address customer inquiries. This robs sales and service people of precious time during their day.

Commence CEO Caretsky Shares Change Management Plan for Distributors

Commence CEO Caretsky Shares Change Management Plan for Distributors

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/30/2007 -- One of the best ways that industrial organizations have found to make sure implementations "stick" is to have the management involved. When sales training is reinforced by management, the sales skills taught during training produced a 15% permanent increase in productivity.

Management needs to be involved in more than a cosmetic fashion. A senior member of the management team needs to attend the training, and this same manager should inspect the sales activities for a period of time to make sure they continuously are consistent with the new sales skills introduced during the training.

According to Larry Caretsky, President of Commence Corporation (www.commence.com/mfg/), "By implementing a formalized sales process, distributors and manufacturers are fundamentally changing the way people do their jobs on a daily basis. There will be natural resistance." Caretsky suggests to develop a lean change management plan, the following questions should be answered:

• What motivation do sales people have to use the new system?
• What potential barriers are there to implementation?
• How can I overcome those barriers?
• How will I know if the implementation is successful?
• What do I expect during the transition?
• Who can people go to if they have questions?

In an effort to help industrial distributors and manufacturers thrive, Commence Corporation presents Practices That Pay: Leveraging Information to Achieve Industrial Selling Results, a compendium of smart practices from the leading industrial sales and marketing experts and organizations that are growing in today's challenging environment.

Commence offers industrial companies complete "Freedom Of Choice" to select the solutions and platform that best meets the business requirements of manufacturers and distributors.           Distributors and Manufacturers Share CRM Concerns

Distributors and Manufacturers Share CRM Concerns

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/27/2006 -- The role of manufacturing and distribution continue to meld. The common element is the need to customize and expand its system as business challenges require.

"Companies experiencing rapid growth in distribution are seeking a well structured system that enables the company to manage the many precise details of their business. Commence CRM for manufacturing and distribution enables expanded industry-specific customizations and material tracking capabilities," according to CEO Larry Caretsky.

There are so many players in the process before manufacturers and distributors ultimately make the sale. ACT! can only take an organization so far and there is often a natural progression to continue driving business growth. Caretsky notes, "Data in the Commence CRM system allows clients to achieve instant credibility with customers, and manage the many variables involved with samples, materials and partners efficiently."

Hundreds of employees or a handful must be able to effectively manage the full scope of customer relationships, including lead generation, sales opportunity management, support and accounting.

Leading Commence CRM clients suggest that while a variety of people use the CRM system, there are automated aspects that run once a parameter is set. Previously MIS personnel had to run the routines; now, the Commence introduces a sophisticated level of efficiency to handle many of these tasks. At the end of the process the goal is simple," according to Caretsky; "To manage margins by being more efficient, in most cases though effective CRM technology."

Customer Relationship Management Leader Larry Caretsky Profiled

Customer Relationship Management Leader Larry Caretsky Profiled

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/19/2006 -- For the past ten years the role of maximizing lifetime value of customers has dramatically changed with the implementation and utilization of CRM.

Commence Industrial CRM Profiled by leading Manufacturing Journalist

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/14/2006 -- According to Larry Caretsky, President of Commence Corporation (www.commence.com/mfg./), "There is rarely one central database of customer information that can be accessed and shared among the people who need it to efficiently do their jobs. As a result, acting less like a team, these people act independently when conducting business and are far less effective.

Caretsky, noted in the feature article that "CEOs of these companies often share how their new enterprise resource planning (ERP) system provides them all the information they need, but fail to recognize that ERP systems provide information after the sale, not before or during the sales process. ERP systems provide no value for improving the efficiency of how to sell and service customers. This is one reason that forecast reports are always inaccurate."

According to Thomas R. Cutler, Manufacturing Journalist in a recent issue of Industrial Focus, "The foundation of any quality sales organization starts with the implementation and management of a sales process. These are the steps required by the sales representative to move the prospect from the initial introduction stage to the closing stage. Few industrial CRM systems provide manufacturers with a structured proven sales process or methodology for evaluating and managing each stage of the sales cycle. A pro-active approach to managing the sales process allows the sales manager to monitor and provide guidance during the cycle, as well as help sales representatives focus on the best opportunities."           Commence Industrial CRM Profiled by Manufacturing Journalist TR Cutler in Manufacturing & Logistics IT

Commence Industrial CRM Profiled by Manufacturing Journalist TR Cutler in Manufacturing & Logistics IT

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/27/2006 -- According to Thomas R. Cutler, Manufacturing Journalist, in a recent issue of Manufacturing and Logistics IT, Industrial CRM is experiencing huge growth. The article may be read in its entirety at http://www.logisticsit.com/absolutenm/templates/article-manufacturing.aspx?articleid=2428&zoneid=2.

Commence offers industrial companies complete "Freedom Of Choice" to select the solutions and platform that best meets the business requirements of manufacturers and distributors. The comprehensive CRM Industrial application suite is available for use on premise or on-demand as a hosted service. Industrial leaders often build departmental CRM solutions with the award winning Commence Industrial CRM Framework. These choices are why so many industrial companies choose Commence as the solution for managing customer relationships. All Commence Industrial solutions support mobile or wireless connectivity and integration to back-office accounting and ERP systems.

According to Larry Caretsky, CEO of Commence Corporation, "CRM for manufacturers must streamline sales processes by ensuring sales opportunities are tracked and closed consistently and efficiently with customizable workflow rules that automate stages in the selling process." As part of the lean manufacturing initiative, effective industrial CRM solutions will reduce errors by creating and modifying accurate quotes for prospects and existing clients using a full-featured product catalog that supports complex pricing levels, units of measure and discounts. The technology must allow quotes to be converted to orders, as well as modifying and saving orders until they are ready to be billed as invoices.

Caretsky suggested that another advantage of sector specific CRM is, "The ability improve demand management with sales pipeline visibility allows manufacturers to implement a sales forecasting process that delivers objective insights on sales activity, rather than subjective guessing."

Decreased client response times are also achieved when there is heightened visibility to manufacturing order status, inventory quantities, and current pricing; this empowers customer service staff with critical customer information.

Aftermarket sales are driving significant industrial CRM technology solutions because manufacturers recognize the value-added profit opportunities available with increased service and aftermarket sales. Only when the minutia of industrial customers' content is detailed in a CRM system can aftermarket sales opportunities be effectively exploited.
Understanding the idiosyncratic nature of manufacturing processes, industrial enterprises, and lean manufacturing principles mandates that CRM technology solutions recognize these unique sector traits to realize optimal benefits.

Global Cyberattack Seems Intent On Havoc, Not Extortion

A cyberattack that caused indiscriminate economic damage around the world was apparently designed to create maximum havoc in Russia’s neighbor and adversary Ukraine, security researchers said. While the rogue software used in the attack was configured as extortionate “ransomware,” that may have just been a ruse. “It is clear that this was targeted indiscriminately at Ukrainian businesses, and the Ukrainian government,” Jake Williams, president of the security firm Rendition Infosec and a former member of the U.S. National Security Agency’s elite cyberwarfare group, told The Associated Press in an online chat. “The ‘ransomware’ component is just a smokescreen (and a bad one).” UKRAINE IN PAIN Although the attack was global in its reach, Ukraine bore the brunt. Computers were disabled at banks, government agencies, energy companies, supermarkets, railways and telecommunications providers. Many of these organizations said they had recovered by Thursday, although some experts suspected that work was incomplete. “There is still a lot of damage, especially in banks,” said Victor Zhora, CEO of the Kiev cybersecurity firm InfoSafe. “ATMs are working (again) but some bank operations are still limited.” He estimated damage in “the millions of dollars, perhaps tens of millions.” And that’s just in Ukraine. Microsoft said the malware hit at least 64 nations, including Russia, Germany and the United States. “I expect that we will see additional fallout from this is the coming days,” said Williams. In Ukraine, suspicion immediately fell on hackers affiliated with Vladimir Putin’s regime, although there is no direct, public evidence tying Russia to the attack. Relations between the two nations have been tense since Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014. Pro-Russian fighters are still battling the government in eastern Ukraine. Experts have also blamed pro-Russian hackers for major cyberattacks on the Ukrainian power grid in 2015 and 2016, assaults that have turned the eastern European nation into the world’s leading cyberwarfare testing ground. A disruptive attack on the nation’s voting system ahead of 2014 national elections is also attributed to Russia. THE MOSCOW CONNECTION The malicious program, which researchers are calling NotPetya, initially appeared to be ransomware. Such malware locks up victims’ files by encrypting them, then holds them hostage while demanding payment — usually in bitcoin, the hard-to-trace digital currency. But researchers said the culprits would have been hard-pressed to make money off the scheme. They appear to have relied on a single email address that was blocked almost immediately and a single bitcoin account that collected the relatively puny sum of $10,000. Firms including Russia’s anti-virus Kaspersky Lab, said clues in the code indicate that the program’s authors would have been incapable of decrypting the data, further evidence that the ransom demands were a smoke screen. The timing was intriguing, too. The attack came the same day as the assassination of a senior Ukrainian military intelligence officer and a day before a national holiday celebrating the new Ukrainian constitution signed after the breakup of the Soviet Union. “Everything being said so far does point to Russia being a leading candidate for a suspect in this attack,” said Robert M. Lee, CEO of Dragos Inc. an expert who has studied the attacks on Ukraine’s power grid. What’s most worrisome and reprehensible, said Lee, is that whoever was behind the attack was unconcerned about the indiscriminate, collateral damage it […]

The Black Rose looks to be moving into the former Benny's Burritos space on Avenue A

The Black Rose, the bar that recently lost its space at 117 Avenue A, is looking to move a block to the south and reopen in the former corner home of Benny's Burritos, according to paperwork filed ahead of next month's CB3-SLA committee meeting.

In late April, the Marshal took possession of the bar space between Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place on behalf of landlord Steve Croman. There were accusation that Croman forced the bar out, even removing the boiler.

As for Benny's, the restaurant closed on Nov. 29, 2014. The corner space at Sixth Street has sat empty since then. The Benny's awning remains up...

Benny's owner Mark Merker said that they were having trouble staying afloat, as costs and rents rose while competition increased from Chipotle and other restaurants that served burritos. Benny's limped along for a few months with a smaller, mostly to-go spot next door. They closed in February 2015. This space became a 99¢ pizza place called 99¢ Pizza, which seems to do brisk business.

There's not much more information about the new Black Rose at this month. The full questionnaire isn't online yet. And it will be somewhat new given that much of the bar's interior ended up on the corner of Avenue A and Seventh Street, where Jerry launched the short-lived Tompkins Square Park Art Bar.

The July CB3-SLA committee meeting is July 17 at 6:30 p.m. at a rather strange venue — Ian Schrager's luxury Public Hotel, 215 Chrystie St.

New Research Highlights Strategies to Drive Industry Cluster Growth

JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) released a new report providing actionable insights for city leaders looking to leverage their area’s competitive industries to build stronger urban economies.

Clusters represent interrelated industries in a specific geography—think of the Automotive cluster in Detroit or the Oil and Gas cluster in Houston. “While more and more cities are thinking about clusters as a key to their economic development plans, city leaders are not always equipped with the strategies to maximize their impact, including targeted growth in inner cities,” said Kim Zeuli, Director of Research and Senior Vice President, ICIC. “Whether your city is beginning to look at cluster strategies, or hoping to spur the growth of targeted clusters, the report offers important takeaways.”

The report, Building Strong Clusters for Strong Urban Economies, profiles cluster building efforts in four U.S. cities—San Diego, St. Louis, Chicago, and New Orleans—and offers six recommendations for designing high-impact clusters.

The San Diego Regional Innovation Cluster and BioSTL (St. Louis) cases offer important strategies for creating successful cluster initiatives. They are spurring growth in the Advanced Defense Technology and Biosciences clusters, respectively. The Chicago Regional Growth Initiative and ProsperityNOLA (New Orleans) cases point to important lessons for creating sustainable cluster-oriented economic development plans, whether within a metropolitan region or city.

The report’s insights were informed by cluster theory and practice, and an in-depth analysis of cluster strategies across the U.S. Recommendations include choosing the right cluster(s), identifying appropriate cluster interventions, being flexible about geography, ensuring leadership has relevant industry expertise, establishing strong public-private partnerships, and identifying a sustainable business model.

The new report was announced by JPMorgan Chase and ICIC on Wednesday in St. Louis at an event hosted by BioSTL. The event, the GlobalSTL Health Innovation Summit, represents a key cluster-building activity of BioSTL’s international attraction initiative, bringing together some of St. Louis’ top hospitals, companies, and investors and a delegation of 14 leading digital health companies from Israel and Ireland looking to set up U.S. headquarters in St. Louis. “BioSTL is proud to earn this distinction for helping to orchestrate a successful bioscience cluster built upon St. Louis’ strengths in medical and plant science,” said Donn Rubin, President and CEO of BioSTL. “It didn’t happen overnight. Our deliberate approach over the past 15 years has put in place the people, ideas, capital, and infrastructure to create a vibrant cluster to spur economic growth. To be recognized by JPMorgan Chase and ICIC as the model bioscience cluster for other U.S. cities is a privilege for the St. Louis region.”

154: A Behind-The-Scenes Look at the Marketing Strategies of Multi-million Dollar Companies with Clate Mask of Infusionsoft

Every entrepreneur at some point faces the dilemma of simply not being able to pour any more hours of work into their company. As a result, they get stuck.

That's where Clate Mask, CEO of Infusionsoft, comes in. In the 10 years Infusionsoft has been operating, Mask has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs use the power of email marketing to double their growth, triple their leads, even quadruple overall revenue.

For Mask, automated email marketing is the secret weapon for any business that's trying to scale. In today's podcast episode, he dishes on how to do it right.

"What happens in an entrepreneurial business, when you're running a small company, it's very, very difficult to follow up effectively with all your leads and customers, and things slip through the cracks," he says. "You're wearing 10 different hats trying to run the business, and ... you just can't keep it all straight when the business starts to grow and when you start to have some success."

At that point, you can either hire more people to handle the workload, which can be costly, or learn how to automate your business.

Mask has helped Infusionsoft's 125,000-plus users create their own automation campaigns by mapping out customer lifecycles, and pinpointing the best times and messages to engage customers and get as much of a return as possible.

In this week's episode, Mask tells us what the marketing strategies of his best users look like, and how you can incorporate them into your own business.

In this episode you will learn:

    • The one thing that most business owners don't recognize is stopping them from growing
    • A battle-tested, tried and true guide to getting the biggest return possible on every single customer
    • The three most critical points in the customer lifecycle and why ignoring them puts your business at risk
    • An exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the email marketing strategies of Infusionsoft's top clients
    • How to combine automation and authenticity into one winning combination
    • & much more!

Mitiska REIM strengthens footprint in Romania with acquisition of Alpha Property Development portfolio

The acquisition of the Alpha Property Development portfolio consisting of 11 income producing retail parks and 3 development opportunities was made on behalf of Mitiska REIM’s institutional fund, First Retail International 2 (FRI 2). The existing properties are all multi-tenanted and anchored by either Lidl and/or Kaufland. The portfolio comprises a total of 55,000m² GLA and is fully leased to strong local and international brands such as Deichmann, Takko, and Pepco.

This acquisition follows the successful acquisition in January 2017 of the remaining 50% shares in the Intercora retail park portfolio in Romania. This brings Mitiska REIM’s total portfolio in Romania to 19 retail parks, with a total GLA of +/-85,000m², in addition to 4 development projects.

David Tejml, CEE Investment Director at Mitiska REIM, comments: “The success of this transaction is due to the strong relationship we were able to develop with the seller and the quality of our investor base, enabling us to move quickly to secure this off-market transaction. In line with our partnership driven investment model, we are very pleased that the former CEO of Alpha Property Development, Clemens Petschnikar, will remain both as a co-investment partner with 5% of shares as well as lead the property services management for our entire Romanian portfolio.”

Apple's iPhone turns 10, bumpy start forgotten

Apple's iPhone turns 10 this week, evoking memories of a rocky start for the device that ended up doing most to start the smartphone revolution and stirring interest in where it will go from here.

Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones since June 29, 2007, but the first iPhone, which launched without an App Store and was restricted to the AT&T network, was limited compared to today's version.

After sluggish initial sales, Apple slashed the price to spur holiday sales that year.

"The business model for year one of the iPhone was a disaster," Tony Fadell, one of the Apple developers of the device, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. "We pivoted and figured it out in year two."

The very concept of the iPhone came as a surprise to some of Apple's suppliers a decade ago, even though Apple, led by CEO Steve Jobs, had already expanded beyond computers with the iPod.

"We still have the voicemail from Steve Jobs when he called the CEO and founder here," said David Bairstow at Skyhook, the company that supplied location technology to early iPhones.

"He thought he was being pranked by someone in the office and it took him two days to call Steve Jobs back."

The iPhone hit its stride in 2008 when Apple introduced the App Store, which allowed developers to make and distribute their mobile applications with Apple taking a cut of any revenue.

Ten years later, services revenue is a crucial area of growth for Apple, bringing in $24.3 billion (S$33.5 billion) in revenue last year.

    New model

Fans and investors are now looking forward to the 10th anniversary iPhone 8, expected this fall, asking whether it will deliver enough new features to spark a new generation to turn to Apple.

That new phone may have 3-D mapping sensors, support for "augmented reality" apps that would merge virtual and real worlds, and a new display with organic LEDs, which are light and flexible, according to analysts at Bernstein Research.

A decade after launching into a market largely occupied by BlackBerry and Microsoft devices, the iPhone now competes chiefly with phones running Google's Android software, which is distributed to Samsung Electronics and other manufacturers around the world.

Even though most of the world's smartphones now run on Android, Apple still garners most of the profit in the industry with its generally higher-priced devices.

More than 2 billion people now have smartphones, according to data from eMarketer, and Fadell, who has worked for both Apple and Alphabet, sees that as the hallmark of success.

"Being able to democratize computing and communication across the entire world is absolutely astounding to me," Fadell said.

"It warms my heart because that's something Steve tried to do with the Apple II and the Mac, which was the computer for the rest of us. It's finally here, 30 years later."

    ==================================================
    小小吐槽一下:刚才写了快一个小时的文章因为我还是不太习惯新编辑器点了“切换到旧版”居然全部都没了。新浪博客作为一个知名博客网站居然没有自动保存功能么,我真的该考虑在别的地方写博客了。
    ==================================================
    Linux严格意义上指的是Linux内核,内核并不能直接使用,必须配合上各种软件工具才行。所谓发行版,就是事先集成了各种不同的软件工具打包发布的Linux操作系统套件。他们面向的用户或者说是侧重点各不相同,有的主要针对桌面用户,有的针对服务器市场,有的针对便携式U盘系统。distrowatch.com 是一个专业介绍各种Linux发行版的网站,它上面有个非常有意思的板块是各种发行版根据点击量的排名,下面就是2016年8月13日这份榜单的截图:

    我们可以看到,Mint以绝对优势排名第一,排名第二的Debian比他少了整整一千多的点击。另外,CentOS和Debian常见于服务器系统,也就是说普通用户心目中Mint是绝对的第一位,至于国内知名度非常高的Ubuntu排名第三。后面的文章我会重点介绍Mint和我们国产的deepin,他们一个是全世界最流行的面向普通桌面用户的发型版,一个是最符合国人使用习惯的发型版。

    刚才在网上搜索信息的时候看到一篇2015年Linux榜单前十位的介绍,原文链接在此:http://www.codeceo.com/article/2015-10-linux-distributions.html,转载如下:

10 Top Linux Distributions of 2015

    POSITION 2015 2014
    1 Linux Mint Linux Mint
    2 Debian Ubuntu
    3 Ubuntu Debian
    4 openSUSE openSUSE
    5 Fedora Fedora
    6 Mageia Mageia
    7 Manjaro Arch
    8 CentOS Elementary
    9 Arch CentOS
    10 Elementary Zorin

    10.Elementary OS

    9. Arch Linux

    8. CentOS

    7. Manjaro

    6. Mageia

    5. Fedora

    4. openSUSE

    3. Ubuntu

    2. Debian

    1. Linux Mint

    Linux Mint的著名口号(“From freedom came elegance”),不只是说说而已。

Comment on Goldman Sachs Provides a Bearish Picture on Tesla Inc (TSLA) as All Eyes on Model 3 Production by joeinslw
Goldman Sachs, did you mean Goldman Sucks? What do they know about EV"s (which stands for Electric Vehicles in case you didn't know) I am sick and tired of reading these predictions that aren't true, or way off base. Not to long ago when tsla was 160.00 per share, there was someone who said Tesla Motors a very bad company & a very bad investment, and put a sell rating on Tesla, and I said that was a "Cheap Shot" I still feel that way with people who make snap predictions without knowing all the real facts, and they can't know all the facts. It's well known that the CEO Mr. Elon Musk keeps many of his decisions including information about Tesla close, (as they say close to the vest) and yet people still make predictions that turn out to be completely wrong, and continue to be wrong for the last five years. These wrong predictions are what makes Tesla Motors a risky investment, I have found it to be just the opposite because of these wrong predictions. I have been seeing, and reading about these predictions for the last 5-6 years, nothing has changed they continue to make wrong predictions which is doing a DIS-service to many investors, or who would be investors, but because of these erroneous comments, they shy away, or worse become short sellers because they are convinced that Tesla Motors will fail, go out of business, and screw all their long & loyal investors. Short sellers and others who don't know what Americans want, continue to bash Tesla Motors they fail to see that this CEO Mr. Musk will not allow that to happen. Several years ago when Tesla was just getting started they did get into some serious financial trouble, but the saving grace was Mr. Musk himself, he put his hand into his own pocket, and saved the company, how many company CEO's do you know that would use their own personal cash to do that? The fact that GM crushed all of the leased EV1's they made in 1999 because they supported fossil fueled cars instead is never published, never talked about in any circles, auto magazines, or publications. Nobody seems to care about what Americans or the World wants, and what they want are Electric Cars that make sense, use less energy, don't have the maintenance schedule that fossil fueled cars require, in one word that made the United States a great country, is freedom, but also....choice...

The 64th Sydney Film Festival Awards On Body and Soul (Berlin winner)

The 64th Sydney Film Festival tonight awarded On Body and Soul, directed by Ildikó Enyedi, the prestigious 10th anniversary Sydney Film Prize, out of a selection of 12 Official Competition films.

The $60,000 cash prize for 'audacious, cutting-edge and courageous' film was awarded to Enyedi at the Festival’s Closing Night Gala awards ceremony and event at the State Theatre, ahead of the Australian premiere screening of Bong Joon-ho's Okja.

Accepting the award, Enyedi said, “It was such an amazingly strong competition. It’s marvellous that such a film can move so many people, it gives me so much hope in cinema and in human communication.”

Sydney filmmakers Sascha Ettinger Epstein and Claire Haywood were awarded the Documentary Australia Foundation Award for Australian Documentary’s $10,000 cash prize for The Pink House, about the last brothel in old mining town Kalgoorlie.

The Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films saw the $7000 cash prize for the Dendy Live Action Short Award going to Adele, directed by Mirene Igwabi.  Sunday Emerson Gullifer was Highly Commended for her short film Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow.  And Daniel Agdag's animation Lost Property Office took out both the $7000 Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director and the $5000 Yoram Gross Animation Award.

The Event Cinemas Australian Short Screenplay Award, a $5,000 prize for the best short screenwriting, was awarded to Michael Cusack, the writer and director of stop motion animation After All.  And the writers of Screenability short film The Milky Pop Kid, Johanna Garvin and Emily Dash, were Highly Commended.

The $10,000 Sydney-UNESCO City of Film Award, bestowed by Create NSW to a trail-blazing NSW-based screen practitioner, went to Indigenous Australian actor, director and writer Leah Purcell.

Chris Freeland announced he will step down as Sydney Film Festival Chair while remaining on the Board.   Freeland, a Partner of Baker McKenzie and a member of its Asia Pacific Regional Council, chaired the organisation for eight years.  He led an era of expansion as well as industry and public popularity, seeing attendances almost double.

Festival Board Director Deanne Weir was welcomed to the position of Chair. Weir has over 25 years’ experience in media and communications and is Foxtel’s Managing Director, Content Aggregation and Wholesale.  She is also a renowned television producer and philanthropist whose passion is to support the advancement of women in the community.

Sydney Film Festival CEO Leigh Small said, “This year again, the Festival exceeded previous attendance figures – a continuing ten-year trend. There was an average of 72% capacity across all sessions with almost 185,000 attendances. This result marks a fitting end to Chris Freeland’s eight year tenure during which the number of people attending the Sydney Film Festival almost doubled.”

Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley said: “2017 has been a significant year for film and filmmakers.   As the world looks for ways to understand and interpret the momentous events and challenges facing humanity, filmmakers across the globe have risen to the challenge.

“From refugees and the horrors of war, to the state of the world’s oceans,  this program of films - screened to Australian audiences for the first time at the 64th Sydney Film Festival - has provided an opportunity to debate and discuss some of the most pressing and contentious issues of our time.

“With a spotlight on questions of equality in race, sexuality, wealth, accessibility, and many other global conversations, these 12 days have provided a wealth of stories from diverse viewpoints and a moment in time to take stock of who, what and where we are today.

“I congratulate all the winners and all of the finalists, as well as the hundreds of filmmakers who have joined us at the Festival to present their ideas and opinions in films, talks and discussions,” he said.

    THE SYDNEY FILM PRIZE

On awarding the Sydney Film Prize to Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi’s On Body and Soul, Jury President Margaret Pomeranz said:

"Over the past 12 days we’ve experienced a most extraordinary cinematic journey curated by Sydney Film Festival.

"We’ve seen films about women struggling to find a space for themselves in a world that seems to want to keep them in their place; there have been films about transgressions, from youthful murder to child abuse.

"We’ve seen films about the many faces of sexual desire; we’ve been invited into worlds of wonder we have never experienced and we’ve been exposed to the ugly side of ourselves, through racism, poverty, cruelty and displacement.  And we’ve also been invited into the world of human compassion.

"And that element of compassion is very present in the film we’ve chosen to award the Sydney Film Prize.  It’s a film that shows us that even in this divided world we are capable of sharing the same dreams, that amongst the ugliness of a slaughterhouse, kindness, gentleness can be found," she said.

"So the Sydney Film Prize goes to the graceful, measured and ever so compassionate On Body and Soul from Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi."

Winner of the Berlinale Golden Bear, On Body and Soul is Enyedi’s visually ravishing return to filmmaking after an 18-year break.  The film is about the unconventional romance between two co-workers who discover that each night they have exactly the same dreams.

The Festival jury was comprised of Australian film critic Margaret Pomeranz, critically acclaimed Nepali director Deepak Rauniyar, former senior film executive of South Korean powerhouse CJ Entertainment Kini Kim, independent Asian-Canadian animator Ann Marie Fleming, and Australian film producer Rosemary Blight of smash-hit The Sapphires and acclaimed television series Cleverman.

Previous winners include: Aquarius (2016), Arabian Nights (2015); Two Days, One Night (2014); Only God Forgives (2013); Alps (2012); A Separation (2011); Heartbeats (2010); Bronson (2009); and Hunger (2008).

The competition is endorsed by FIAPF, the regulating body for international film festivals, and is judged by a jury of five international and Australian filmmakers and industry professionals.

THE DOCUMENTARY AUSTRALIA FOUNDATION AWARD FOR AUSTRALIAN DOCUMENTARY

The Documentary Australia Foundation Award for Australian Documentary was awarded to The Pink House from filmmakers Sascha Ettinger Epstein and Claire Haywood. The Jury comprising award-winning Asian-American filmmaker Ramona S. Diaz, CEO of the Documentary Australia Foundation Dr Mitzi Goldman and Australian based Iranian filmmaker Amin Palangi in a joint statement said:

"Amongst ten noteworthy films, one film enthralled us with its blend of nuanced characters and narrative depth.

“In classic cinema verite fashion, the filmmaker introduces us to two singular women who give her unfettered access to their constantly changing lives, revealing a profound trust between filmmaker and subject that renders this film deeply personal and intimate.

“Through the unflinching gaze of her lens, this filmmaker immerses us in a world that, in less disciplined hands, could very well have been voyeuristic.  Instead we are treated to a film that is handled with affection and grace.”

“We the Jury give the Australian documentary prize to Sasha Ettinger Epstein and Claire Haywood for The Pink House.”

2017 marks the fourth year the prize has been supported by the Foundation.

Previous winners include: In the Shadow of the Hill (2016); Only the Dead (2015); 35 Letters (2014); Buckskin (2013); Killing Anna (2012); Life in Movement (2011); and The Snowman (2010). In 2009 the inaugural prize was shared between Contact and A Good Man, and each film received a $10,000 cash prize.

THE DENDY AWARDS FOR AUSTRALIAN SHORT FILMS

The Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films were awarded to Mirene Igwabi for Adele (Dendy Live Action Short Award), Sunday Emerson Gullifer for Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow (Highly Commended), and Daniel Agdag for Lost Property Office (Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director and Yoram Gross Animation Award). The Jury comprised Canadian filmmaker Kirsten Carthew, former Vice President of Paramount Pictures Mike Selwyn, and Australian film producer Kath Shelper. In a joint statement, the Jury said:

"This year’s Jury was particularly excited by the exceptional talent that continues to emerge from Australia’s animation sector.

“We were captivated by the original and diverse stories and variety of animation techniques presented in both the Dendy Awards and in the rest of the Festival.

“Lost Property Office stood out for its direction, storytelling and exquisite visuals that could only have been realised through animation, which was the perfect choice of medium to tell this story.”

The Festival’s short-film competition is now in the 48th year; and has been sponsored by Dendy Cinemas for 29 years. Winners of the Best Live Action Short Film award and the Yoram Gross Animation award, sponsored by Yoram Gross Films, are Academy Award-eligible, opening new pathways for many Australian filmmakers.

These ground-breaking awards have kick-started the careers of many prominent filmmakers, with past competitors Warwick Thornton, Ariel Kleiman, Cate Shortland, Jane Campion, Phillip Noyce and Ivan Sen among Dendy Awards alumni.

Global cyberattack seems intent on havoc, not extortion
PARIS – A cyberattack that caused indiscriminate economic damage around the world was apparently designed to create maximum havoc in Russia's neighbor and adversary Ukraine, security researchers said.

While the rogue software used in the attack was configured as extortionate "ransomware," that may have just been a ruse.

"It is clear that this was targeted indiscriminately at Ukrainian businesses, and the Ukrainian government," Jake Williams, president of the security firm Rendition Infosec and a former member of the U.S. National Security Agency's elite cyberwarfare group, said in an online chat. "The 'ransomware' component is just a smokescreen (and a bad one)."

    UKRAINE IN PAIN

Although the attack was global in its reach, Ukraine bore the brunt. Computers were disabled at banks, government agencies, energy companies, supermarkets, railways and telecommunications providers. Many of these organizations said they had recovered by Thursday, although some experts suspected that work was incomplete.

"There is still a lot of damage, especially in banks," said Victor Zhora, CEO of the Kiev cybersecurity firm InfoSafe. "ATMS are working (again) but some bank operations are still limited." He estimated damage in "the millions of dollars, perhaps tens of millions."

And that's just in Ukraine. Microsoft said the malware hit at least 64 nations, including Russia, Germany and the United States. "I expect that we will see additional fallout from this is the coming days," said Williams.

In Ukraine, suspicion immediately fell on hackers affiliated with Vladimir Putin's regime, although there is no direct, public evidence tying Russia to the attack. Relations between the two nations have been tense since Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014. Pro-Russian fighters are still battling the government in eastern Ukraine.

Experts have also blamed pro-Russian hackers for major cyberattacks on the Ukrainian power grid in 2015 and 2016, assaults that have turned the eastern European nation into the world's leading cyberwarfare testing ground. A disruptive attack on the nation's voting system ahead of 2014 national elections is also attributed to Russia.

    THE MOSCOW CONNECTION

The malicious program, which is known by a variety of names, including NotPetya, initially appeared to be ransomware. Such malware locks up victims' files by encrypting them, then holds them hostage while demanding payment – usually in bitcoin, the hard-to-trace digital currency.

But researchers said the culprits would have been hard-pressed to make money off the scheme. They appear to have relied on a single email address that was blocked almost immediately and a single bitcoin account that collected the relatively puny sum of $10,000.

Firms including Russia's anti-virus Kaspersky Lab, said clues in the code indicate that the program's authors would have been incapable of decrypting the data, further evidence that the ransom demands were a smoke screen.

The timing was intriguing, too. The attack came the same day as the assassination of a senior Ukrainian military intelligence officer and a day before a national holiday celebrating the new Ukrainian constitution signed after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

"Everything being said so far does point to Russia being a leading candidate for a suspect in this attack," said Robert M. Lee, CEO of Dragos Inc. an expert who has studied the attacks on Ukraine's power grid.

What's most worrisome and reprehensible, said Lee, is that whoever was behind the attack was unconcerned about the indiscriminate, collateral damage it caused – much of it within Russia itself. That's highly atypical behavior for nation-states.

    ACCOUNTING FOR MALWARE

Williams and other researchers said all evidence indicates that NotPetya was introduced via Ukrainian financial software provider MeDoc. It is one of just two companies in the eastern European nation that supplies required tax software, Zhora said.

Security experts believe MeDoc was the unwitting victim of something akin to a "watering-hole attack," where a malicious program surreptitiously planted at a popular destination infects parties that visit. MeDoc's user base is heavily financial – and includes multinational corporations with offices in Ukraine.

NotPetya was cleverly engineered to spread laterally within Windows networks and across the globe via private network connections. Globally, dozens of major corporations and government agencies have been disrupted, including FedEx subsidiary TNT.

Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk, one of the global companies hit hardest, said Thursday that most of its terminals were running again, though some are operating in a limited way or more slowly than usual.

Problems have been reported across the shippers' global business, from Mobile, Alabama, to Mumbai in India. At Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port, several hundred containers could be seen piled up at just two of more than a dozen yards.

"The vessels are coming, the ships are coming, but they are not able to take the container because all the systems are down," trading and clearing agent Rajeshree Verma said. "We are actually in a fix because of all this."
